Covid

The Cambridge’s moving from London home to Norfolk home

.....how come people are not up in arms about this? It has been briefly mentioned in the news but not picked up like the Cummings story. I think it was in last couple of weeks. I don’t care and think it is fine. One little pod to another little pod and I thought the idea of not being allowed to go to second homes was a bit tough. Especially as it would reduce population in cities so make more room for those with no ‘country’ option (most of us).

Also Boris Johnson went to Chequers to recuperate from his Covid not no 10 and no one seemed to think that was a problem.

They went before lockdown occurred. Can't get het up about that, soz.

To be fair, there was quite a lot of controversy when BJ went to Chequers, with the argument seemingly being that he couldn’t recuperate at No 10 as it was primarily his workplace.

The Cambridges as far as I know haven't told a pack of lies about it.

A lot of people weren't thrilled about the Chequers decamp.

I assume they went by helicopter house to house. They aren’t likely to be popping to Tesco or the local b&b.

There was - about both.

They went before the lockdown so it's irrelevant but the most important thing about Cummings is that he is responsible for the message and he has demonstrated that it's not important enough for him to follow it, thus removing any hope that the public will comply going forward.

It is a bit rubbish that Wils and Kate went to their second home, but as PP have pointed out they went just before lockdown (and were probably given a heads up about it). Nice try to attempt to deflect from DC though OP!

I expect there to be different rules for W&K than for the rest of us. But DC needs to follow the ‘rest of us’ rules not the royalty rules.

They weren't symptomatic, they are heirs to the throne and there are contingencies in place for the royal family for circumstances such as this, and pretty sure they went before lockdown?

Report
Sweetnhappy1 · 25/05/2020 10:57

I also thought they went before lockdown was announced and assume they didn't have coronavirus symptoms when they travelled and also assume wouldn't have stopped at service stations on their way spreading coronavirus symptoms.

Urm Royal family with 2 heirs to the throne VS Dominic I made up the rules Cummings isn't really the same is it ? And they went and stayed in Norfolk they didn't belt up and down the A1 .

They arrived before lockdown, haven’t lied about it, didn’t drive across the country whilst symptomatic, have remained there throughout. Not the same at all.
Johnson went there when discharged from hospital, kind of resets the clock in terms of remaining in situ. Maybe technically an issue, but I can’t get get up about it.

I’m not a fan of either Johnson or the Cambridges, but drawing comparisons is really quite a reach.

This is more about self isolating when having the virus, than actually moving around during lockdown (although as noted I think they moved before the official lockdown.

The Cambridges are now completely owned by the press. It’s highly doubtful we will ever read anything critical of them ever again.

I can't see what the problem is.

For Posh people the country residence is the main home, then they have a place "in town" which they live in most of the time, but always consider the country seat to be their true home.

Yes, as pp had said. They went before lockdown and I suspect they actually consider Norfolk their primary home. Also, here's a really important point - they weren't symptomatic and knowingly spreading it all over the place, including to elderly and/or vulnerable relatives.

I know a lot of people were upset with people who chose to go into lock down at their second homes, but I have to admit that while I was stuck in my one and only home, I completely understood why people chose to do it. Once they were there however, they needed to STAY there, obey all guidelines, restrict external time to essential trips to shops and exercise only. Which is what Kate and William appear to have done.

According to the Express, there's huge interest in whether they'll return to London so that Charlotte can return to school next week. I follow royals with some interest but I have to admit I have zero interest in this. In passing, once it was brought to my attention, I did wonder whether Charlotte's return/non return would encourage/discourage other families but it hadn't occurred to me to care beforehand.

They went before lockdown
They weren't infected with Corona
They wont have stopped for petrol, a fag, a coffee/packet of crisps/M&m's at the garage
They didn't lie about it

I think it's pretty obvious that Dominic Cummings didn't go to his second home, he went to see his parents, who are presumably over 70. Also, his wife (and he?) were symptomatic and therefore supposed to be self-isolating, not whizzing around the country visiting elderly relatives.
Oh, and yes, he lied about it.
I wouldn't mind seeing people have a go at Boris and the Cambridges either, but it isn't the same thing.

Report
BruceWilllis · 25/05/2020 11:44

Your point about Boris/chequers/number 10 is invalid. Anyone with any common sense knows that No.10 is primarily a place of work and not his actual permanent home. Would you like to camp out in your workplace after being in hospital for a few nights? Instead of your own bed?

I think royals are even higher about the law than PM/DC bunch, remember Andrew?

Report
GiantPinesAhem · 25/05/2020 12:22

The royals with direct line to the throne we're all spread to entirely separate locations so that any infections would be contained and not spread between- and yes, outside of London makes total sense. Queen to Windsor, Charles to Balmoral and William to Norfolk- entirely appropriate for protection the line of succession.
