Wales - Holiday restrictions

Hi does anyone have information, thoughts about when travel/holiday restrictions from England to Wales (Holiday self catering within Wales) may be lifted?

I’m interested in this too. I’m 10 mins from the Welsh border and frequently stay in Wales. Won’t go until it’s considered safe for residents though.

@tootyfilou yes, we know the rules, nothing wrong with speculating on a discussion forum as to when they may change though. Just as people are wondering about a summer break in Cornwall etc in other threads.

I think if you own a holiday home or caravan you will be allowed in the amber phase. Everyone else in the green!!

I think people are just going to have to accept that holiday's are not going to happen this year. If I lived in a touristy area I wouldn't be happy with a mass influx of outsiders. It won't do anybody any harm to go without a holiday for a while.

North Wales is a 'hotspot' at the moment.

My early July cottage has just cancelled... I've postponed the booking till next year...we visit annually.
I'm really upset for some ridiculous reason... hoped it may magically happen. Should be on a 2 week Greek holiday at the moment...maybe its holiday blues.
It will all still be there next year.

Thank you for all the comments - good to hear what people think.

I wouldn't dream of travelling to Wales unless the restriction had been lifted.

They haven't given dates on the amber & green phases have they?

It is. Looks like its starting to peak here. We were quite late getting our first case.

Why do so many posters feel entitled to a holiday? I've already accepted that its highly unlikely I'll be going anywhere this year, abroad is definitely out of the question as a travelling by plane is the last thing I'd want to do right now and I think going anywhere in the UK would be unfair on the people who live there.

I should be on a cottage in South Wales now. We rebooked for September, if it's still not possible then we'll have to rearrange it again.

@Mintychapstick what if tourists travelling to the area is how local people make their living and put food on the table, do you not want to support them, if you are symptom free?

Just because you are symptom free doesn't mean you don't have the virus.

Lots of people are struggling to make a living at the moment, so that's a non argument. Look at the Cornwall thread on here, lots of people who live there are really worried they will get an influx of tourists in the summer. They only have one hospital with few ICU beds. A surge in cases would be catastrophic, and the situation in Wales is similar. The more rural area's and coast regions don't have anywhere near enough ICU beds to cope with a surge.

I was holding out a tiny bit of hope for ours at the end of July, but pretty sure it won’t hapoen Sad

It's not possible to give dates. It all depends on how the easing of lockdown goes.

Report
CoachBombay · 18/05/2020 16:31

As others have said amber phase for second home owners, green for tourists.

No dates because the Welsh Government aren't testing enough people to know what's going on in the population.

We gave up after being unable to test 5000 a day 🙄

I don't think you'll be coming here this summer, it's May now, were not even in Red, schools won't be opening in June possibly not even July.

Mynydd · 18/05/2020 16:34

I live in a very popular tourist spot. I don't think tourists will be welcome for a while to come still. Air bnb owners I know locally are writing off the entire summer season. Our numbers are still rising and our hospital facilities just won't cope, sorry. Plus local feelings are running very high against holiday makers at the moment.

Our beautiful mountains and beaches will still be here when the virus has eased.

@GruffaloandMouse it's the not knowing isn't it, I have to pay the balance early June, because there is no direct regulation meaning it can't go ahead! Then it will be trying to get a refund if a later regulation means it can't go ahead.

If it's any consolation I would love a city break, or just to know that I may be able to go for a city break in the next few months. I'm pretty sure it won't happen but the frustration and wanting to get away runs both ways!

You don't live in London clearly. Or anywhere else with an airport.
Hundreds of thousands have arrived over the last two months.

Thinking about it, are the airports in Wales still operating?
If they are, and presumably it's with the same lack of checks or quarantine as for those in the rest of the UK, it seems bizarre they're keeping out the English.

Could this be a case for racial discrimination? Allowing people from abroad in (at the airports) but not from England.
