I read the above which gives a good description of what to look out for in young children, I had been following this subject of Kawasaki closely since reading it and finding that mums of young children thinking their little ones would be immune to Covid 19. I am not posting this to frighten anyone just to make all the mums out there aware.

A thread about this has just been deleted so I imagine this will go the same way...

There’s already a thread on this. The Sun is hardly a reliable source and there are multiple things that cause Kawasaki’s, not just Covid.

Kawasaki is a post viral inflammatory disease not a version of covid that affects children.

Actual facts, not the scaremongering bullshit constantly being posted, can be found here: www.societi.org.uk/kawasaki-disease-and-covid-19/

RIP Alex. There is so much we don't know about Covid and I've been following the reports around the world on Kawasaki disease / links to Covid. It is worrying. I don't know why a parents site would remove discussion about a rare childhood illness though? Seems counterproductive? We should have all the information to be fully informed.

Report
Pertella · 17/05/2020 11:34

It was removed because it was implying kawasaki is a version of covid that will kill your child.

Kawasaki is a rare post viral inflammatory syndrome that affects a handful of children year on year. It is not a consequence of covid.

From the link:

28 April 2020

We’ve been contacted by a huge number of families regarding the severe worry caused by social media and other media coverage on Covid-19 and Kawasaki Disease.

A lot of these media articles were confused and contained little factual information.

Whilst we acknowledge the important role of the medical community observing these cases and support efforts to monitor the situation closely, a lot of worry has been caused. We understand that and want to provide some clarity.

Based on all available information made available so far we note:

The cases being referred to have been reported in approximately 20 children in the UK (out of 11.5 million U.K. children) – of whom half have tested negative for Covid-19 according to their doctors.

There is no current evidence of any increased incidence or greater susceptibility to Covid-19 infection for children who had Kawasaki Disease in the past.

All of the c. 20 cases are new, acute illness in children.

Fewer cases of Kawasaki Disease than would be normally expected at this time of year are currently being seen – not more.

Kawasaki Disease is a seasonal inflammatory disorder peaking in the winter and spring, and whilst no infection has ever been proven to be the sole trigger, the scientific community believe that any one of many infections may trigger Kawasaki Disease in susceptible children. For the majority of cases, Kawasaki Disease occurs without ever identifying any infectious cause. We are aware of recent delayed presentations of Kawasaki Disease because of initial incorrect diagnoses of Covid-19, resulting in adverse coronary outcomes due to delayed institution of treatment.

Can we have a COVID Scaremongering topic to stick all these threads in?

@MNHQ is there any chance that the statement regarding Kawasaki Disease can be pinned to the top of this board to prevent any further scaremongering and misinformation?

I'm with Vortex, we need to know about these types of things.
Mine has Corona Toes and we have been told by GP to look for signs of Kawasaki as it can be found around Coronavirus. I'm listening to my GP who seems to know what she is talking about.

its not even kawaski disease its a condition very like it thought to be covid related. Also it has been seen in young adults not just those under 14. I would not take the daily rag papers as true sources of information.

Poor little Alex and his family.

Their tragic story is being exploited by the press purely for click bait nothing else this isn't fair on them. Let them grieve in peace

And do your research

Report
Pertella · 17/05/2020 11:47

The issue is not being informed about Kawasaki. The issue is the scaremongering and outright misinformation and lies designed to whip up fear and hysteria.

Hence my request to @MNHQ to consider a pinned thread giving the FACTS not tabloid media bullshit.

It is not scaremongering. It is very rare but so is meningitis and parents are encouraged to be aware of that.

I was watching a YouTube video by a nurse academic last night about this. There seems to be a correlation with covid, but the link isn't proven yet. It seems that a very small number of children have developed this after having covid. Having covid might have been undetected at the time. Immediate medical treatment is vital.

TerrapinStation · 17/05/2020 11:49

Raising awareness of possible childhood illnesses is a good thing, trying to scare parents with only partial information, not so much.

Report
Velvian · 17/05/2020 11:52

@Pertella, these cases in children (unsure about this specific case) are linked to Covid and have similarities to Kawasaki Disease. The cases reported by the BBC and New York Times are not cases that would have happened anyway, they are a new phenomenon.

Report
Pertella · 17/05/2020 11:57

As Terrapin said, raising awareness is one thing, blatant scaremongering and using the death of a child for clickbait is quite another.

The statement posted above was from April 28 & is already way out of date. Over 100 cases in UK now. Clusters across Europe & North America. Many more will be sub-clinical & not counted.
To be clear, the new syndrome, Pims-TS, is NOT Kawasaki disease. It shares similarities to it & also symptoms of toxic shock. Many features & symptoms are different from classic Kawasaki disease, including age profile of kids.
It is an entirely new syndrome, associated to prior Covid-19 infection. It is deserving of our attention & concern (not hysteria & doom-mongering obvs) because it is unknown. We cannot assume that statistics related to classic Kawasaki disease - in terms of case numbers & outcomes - will apply to PIms-Ts. Much more data & research needed.

Pertella · 17/05/2020 12:11

mac12 there is no issue with a fact and data based discussion and your post is a good example of the type of post that is needed.

There is a link between Kawasaki like symptoms and Covid-19. It tends to occur on average 4-6 weeks following infection. A study from Bergamo Italy showed a 30-fold increase in children showing Kawasaki like symptoms. It is still very rare, but there is little doubt this is related to Coronavirus.
