Re SARS:

Studies done during the outbreak found that for medical professionals, wearing any type of mask compared to none could reduce the chances of getting sick by about 80%

There is no vaccine for SARS, although doctor Anthony Fauci mentioned that the CDC developed one and placed it in the US national stockpile

Ok. Anything to add or is this just for people's info?

It's interesting to know that they did manage to make a vaccine. I know Covid19 differs a little.

Ah ok. Yeah I don't doubt that they'll make a vaccine for this. They have the brightest people in the world working on it with almost unlimited resources.

Covid-19 is SARS.

I was referring to SARS of 2003 or so. That epidemic lasted 7 months.

Erm, covid-19 is not SARS. They are both coronaviruses, but different ones.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 - is the full title of the current one

Maybe I need to read more about the original one or perhaps other MNetters know - but one small glimmer of hope is it did seemingly just burn out...

I know they are different though - the first seemingly more dangerous, the second far more widespread...

SOURCE??

Does that help people in the community or did you just one to highlight the dangers of lack of PPE for HCPs?

You're being OBSESSIVE about the face covering issue again, Jobhunter7. Naughty.

Hong kong : Sars disease turned Hong Kong into a ghost town, and killed nearly 300 people, including eight frontline healthcare workers. Hk park has memorial to them. They did not die in vaim as it led to massive improvements in epidemic control and management in Hk - for example libraries and soft play areas even pre-covid closed regularly to disinfect throughout the day and once a week closed 1/2 day for deep clean - in every healthcare setting Masks are the norma - the current coronavirus outbreak was therefore less severe and still under control, compared to the deadly pandemic of SARS.

@NotEverythingIsBlackAndWhite SARS isn't Covid 19. SARS and Covid 19 are both strains of Corona-viruses

Yes it is, it is officially SARS-CoV-2

SARS, MERS and Covid are all prongs on the same fork. This is why research into SARS and MERS is providing much of the foundation for current research.

And yes the scientific name is SARS-Covid-19.

@jobhunter7, you're constantly posting on MN about face coverings. Do you have a long list of other websites to visit & promote your agenda?

What's wrong with OP giving useful information? Why shouldn't they post on more than one thread. I've noticed a concerning rise in attempts to bully people off here because they dare post more than once. As long as it's not offensive or personally insulting they have every right to. As do we all. Don't worry OP it's happened to me too. Your posts are a lot more helpful and interesting than posts telling other posters to stop posting.

so fine if they are based on weak evidence. I guess that's democracy.

The evidence isn't weak. It's certainly enough to convince many other countries worldwide. Who have all handled the pandemic far better than us.

It's mandatory to wear them in public in many countries during this pandemic.

Masks are no miracle protection but they do make some difference -(to both wearer and those around them). And some difference makes quite a lot of difference when everyone's doing it.
