Furlough..when will it end?

Just that really, I’ve been reading numerous reports that Rishi is going to soon stop furlough or ask people to work part time! I’m currently on furlough..I’m a nursery worker and I’m worried about the next announcement on Tuesday, I believe? I understand that furlough can’t go on indefinitely and I am looking forward to returning to work, my question i suppose is can he just cut it or do you think it will be phased out? I know nobody can give a definitive answer, maybe Boris’ announcements tonight may shed some clues on this!

I think he has already said it will be phased out.

Yes, maybe. So wait a few hours instead of asking randoms to speculate?

From what I read in the news, there is speculation that he will be asking businesses to get furloughed workers to return part-time so that business can take back part of the burden of the wage bill. I would think that this would mean the government "topping up" those employees' wages then rather than paying the majority share.

but how can you return to work part time if the buisness you work in as been told it has to close?

LivinLaVidaLoki · 10/05/2020 15:43

Depends how much longer it will be told to be closed for kimlo

Thanks, I have a very worried family member I’m just asking for reassurance really as I told her that I thought it’d be phased out Or if part time they’ll top wages up!

Although the scheme currently finishes at the end of June, it looks like it will be gradually phased out. I’ve read articles of the 80% being reduced to 60% and the maximum monthly amount of £2,500 also being reduced.

I'd be delighted to have a household income again, but not sure how on earth DH is meant to return to work in live events any time soon?

It’ll be interesting to see what Boris says tonight, I
Work in early years and I’m looking forward to returning to work, I’ll be watching In anticipation to which businesses pan out where on his road map, schools always get a mention but not nurseries or early years!
I’ll talk to my family member to Try and ease her anxieties!

I wonder if they will reduce furlough first in industries that can get back to work - shops, constructions, offices, etc and keep furlough only for those in hospitality, events, tourism etc

My company provides services to the events industry and seeing as congresses etc are not going ahead for the foreseeable if furlough stops then I will have to be on unpaid leave or made redundant

@Mikki2019 I very much doubt pubs, casinos, gyms or many other buisnesses that were told to close will be open again next week.

@MaxNormal, that’s the worry isn’t it if they can’t return to work will they still receive furlough And if so how long For? Such a worry!

Does anyone think nurseries may start to reopen next week to support families who are being told to return to work?

@Samcj02 honestly it's an awful situation. The furlough doesn't nearly cover usual earnings for various reasons but it's obviously better than bugger all.
I really hope that they'll extend it for certain sectors that plainly can't re-open yet. They'll kill off those industries if they don't.

If schools need 3 weeks notice to open I assume that nurseries would need time to make contingency plans and buy in hand gel etc

Report
kimlo · 10/05/2020 16:30

@Samcj02 I think that the people who can use early years settings will start to widen, but I don't think it will be from next week. More probably when the schools start to open up. Possibly they might let the 4 year olds go to help with the transition to school.

@BrieAndChilli I though the same, but spoke to an accountant friend and he said the problem with trying to limit furlough to certain industries (as with any benefit etc) is it becomes more expensive to administer. Also what do you do with businesses that are directly linked, but support? Very difficult to say what is a “hospitality business”.

I wonder if there may be a combination to reducing (60 per cent and cap at 2k) and also a job subsidy scheme - take your workers off furlough and they will pay 50 per cent of wages up to say 1.5k (although if they do that there is a risk companies will furlough people in June to then put them on the subsidy scheme).

Not seen anything that more people are going back to work next week. Would take time for employers to set up social distancing etc

Furlough..when will it end?

Furlough..when will it end?

Current scheme ends on 30th June.
Likely to be extended but MUCH less generous into July
and then even tighter in August
and end completely in September

@MaxNormal I hope we all get answers soon! It’s hard isn’t it as you say I’m so grateful for the furlough scheme but looking forward to returning to work!
