Covid

Is this wrong?

So I shared a petition on Facebook about making the Coronavirus mandatory if we ever get one. I’m definitely not anti vaccination and one of those people who believe vaccines cause autism. But I think we should have a say in if we take the vaccine or not as opposed to it being mandatory. So anyway, a family friend commented on it calling me fucking stupid, and another comment calling me crazy etc. I do not appreciate being called stupid or crazy for my OWN opinion. At the end of the day if you don’t agree with someone you either don’t say anything or message them privately. What do you guys think? Is this too far? What’s your opinions. As clearly these days I can’t even do anything or say anything right.

Did you say you wanted it or didnt? It's a matter of choice just like all vaccines

Why have you shared a petition about something that hasn't even been found yet? And do you not think it's deeply insensitive given that there are still hundreds of people dying daily?

100% personal choice.

a bit naive really to post something so contentious on social media. you really should have been prepared for all types of answers.

No vaccine exists yet and it won't be made mandatory anyway. They won't need to, enough people will happily take it anyway.

Why would you bother sharing such a pointless petition about something that isn't happening. No one has mentioned making it mandatory.

Proof of vaccination or immunity might be needed to work in a hospital, care home, or in fact any role with vulnerable people as determined by death rates. Anyone without the certificate might be unable to visit certain countries also. That's how very important vaccinations tend to be enforced around the world. I'm not sure if you're objecting to that OP, or if you've got confused and think you'll have the army at your door with a needle?

No you’re not getting the point here at all. The point is that there was a petition on Facebook that IF there is a vaccine is should NOT be made mandatory for everybody to take it. I know there’s not a vaccine for corona virus yet but this petition states that if there was going to be one it could very well be made mandatory. I believe in having your OWN decision whether you want to have this or not. For example I’m not sure I would be comfortable having this vaccination IF we were to have one as it still would be new and surely there would be side affects like the flu jab. Do you see what I mean now?

I don’t think it should be mandatory, but I think any organisation or business should have the right to refuse membership or employment to a person without it, UNLESS they have documentation that shows that they can not have it for health reasons, such as allergies. Why should those who are vulnerable to infection, be put at risk in their place of employment, education or membership, because someone doesn’t want a vaccination. I also think that should be true of those who refuse other vaccinations, such as measles, whipping cough, etc.

Yeah, I’d have had a bit of an eyeroll at you sharing that.

I think that if you post your views on social media, you need to be prepared for the possibility that someone will comment disagreeing with your views. If I see a FB post that I strongly disagree with, I will comment explaining why. My view is that if you can't cope with someone disagreeing with you, don't post your views on social media! Having said that, any comments I post are always reasoned. I would never post a comment saying "You're stupid!" (even if I might privately think it).

MRex · 09/05/2020 23:05

I see you've got confused, yes. You're signing a petition to say you don't want to be forced to have a thing that doesn't exist and that nobody has ever said you will be forced to have. Because someone linked it on Facebook. Surely you can see why that's daft?

@MRex again you’re missing my point in this completely. I’m completely aware that it doesn’t exist because I know a lot of people would be having it which would be absolutely right to do so if they felt necessary. However if you were vegan and someone told you “here a sausage you have to eat it” you wouldn’t would you because of your own beliefs? That’s my point. People have a right it’s not the 1930s.

There is no precedent in the U.K. for forced vaccines and actually quite a lot of cultural expectation of bodily autonomy and medical consent.

So this is not something I could get worked up about —and you should have realised that whatever your opinion if you share a petition like that people are going to misunderstand and have a go at you as if you’re a rampant anti vaxxer.

Step away from the keyboard

On the substance of your petition, I generally agree that vaccines should not be mandatory, though I think it can be reasonable to make vaccination a pre-requisite for some jobs (eg hepatitis vaccination for healthcare workers who could be at risk of infecting patients). However, given that (a) we don't have a covid-19 vaccine yet, and (b) when we do have one, demand is likely to vastly outstrip supply for some time, concern about covid-19 vaccination being made mandatory is a long way down my worry list.

Report
MRex · 09/05/2020 23:15

No, you're missing the point @Halli2020. Please link to a government source that states the vaccination will be mandatory; link to the piece of legislation that allows this. Hint - look at the March 2020 Coronavirus Act to discover the opposite. Please also describe how you think you will be forced to have it even under a mandatory regime such as Italy's, because that may be another area in which you are confused. Another hint - pay a fine / can't take up certain employment nor go to certain countries NOT people running at you with needles or whatever vision you have.

I won't get cv-vacc if offered (last tattered thread of autonomy I might have), but I do think it's reasonable to make it mandatory for health & social care workers to take their jobs. Except that flu jab uptake in those jobs has never been fantastic, so could cv19 jab really be made mandatory? I am not sure.

You have put this on a social media outlet presumably to get a response/reaction (otherwise why else share it) so you have to expect other peoples views as well as your own. Had you been face to face with your commenters would they have called you crazy or fucking stupid? Dependant on the type of relationship you have with them I suspect you would.
I'm not saying either of you are right or wrong in your views but you have to expect responses when posting your them on a public forum

OP I got your original post entirely- and I haven't missed the point at all... but I still can't understand why you are signing a petition for something that as of yet is hypothetical- as a vaccine doesn't exist. Nor has there been any suggestion that if/when it's invented that it'll be compulsory. The negative reactions you may have got- will be causing hares to run before it is actually necessary.

Why did you sign and share a petition when a vaccine doesn't exist, and nobody has said that it'll be compulsory if and when it has been created?

Report
SmileyClare · 09/05/2020 23:30

I hate Facebook. It's so full of absolute crap and misinformation. Stop signing and sharing petitions on it.

Everyone has a right to refuse a vaccine but most people won't exercise that right for moral reasons. In simple terms, it's selfish.

It will not be mandatory. However, you may face restrictions if you don't vaccinate; refused international travel for example. Which seems fair.

Bojangles33 · 09/05/2020 23:31

I don't think you can expect to share anything that contentious and get no response. I also think that in this case your view does effect other people I.e you campaigning to not take the vaccine means spread is higher so people have a right to voice their reasons for disagreeing

Think about the agenda of the person who wrote that petition. You're not forming your own informed opinion, you're spreading shit information around social media. These petitions are like childish chain letters. Step away.

Sorry to be harsh but come on now. At least watch the news or something.
