School secretary saying school might reopen on Monday

I received an email on Friday with the weekly news from school. The secretary writes a brief email and then attaches the news from the HT. She has said school might be open on Monday depending on what Boris says. Considering this was published the day before it seems premature to say the least:


A DfE spokesperson said:
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson has not set a date for schools reopening.
Schools will remain closed, except for children of critical workers and vulnerable children, until the scientific advice indicates it is the right time to re-open and the five tests set out by Government to beat this virus have been met.
We are also working closely with the sector as we consider how to reopen schools, nurseries and colleges and will ensure everyone has sufficient notice to plan and prepare."

The media is bad enough and now the secretary is getting hopes or fears up (depending on your stance) and adding to the confusion. Does anyone really think that boris will say tomorrow that schools will be back the next day?? If schools are back then workplaces are going to want their staff back which will create a nightmare for childcare that will need to be sorted. People need some kind of notice, not just 12 hours ffs.

There is absolutely no way that schools will open this monday morning at 8.30pm after Boris has announced it on sunday evening at 7.30pm.

I live opposite my daughters primary school and was speaking to the headteacher (from a acceptable distance) on Thursday and they haven't had any indication whatsoever of anything, not even September

As others have said, the government will give schools at least 3 weeks‘ notice before reopening.

I’d send the HT an email today saying that’s a pretty irresponsible letter to send to the parents.

I doubt the headteacher told her to write this. The one thing that has been clear is that Boris accepted the principle that schools needed 3 weeks notice. So even if it was announced that schools were to fully open on Sunday (unlikely), it wouldn't take effect until after half term.

It's a state school and to clarify it's the secretary's view, not the HT. pretty shit to send it on a bank holiday Friday too so that no o e can contact school before 8am on Monday to clarify anything. She's a fantastic member of staff and goes above and beyond daily for parents and pupils so this has surprised me.

Ours get 2 weeks at half term so in that case the earliest they could be back is the second week of June. Not that mine will be as I'm shielded I'd love some time to myself. Just an hour would be bliss. It's something to look forward to in the very distant future though.

Surely the secretary is on shaky ground adding her own views like that? I’m sure the head wouldn’t be happy. A lot of parents must be in a panic if they believe it could be true.

Sounds like the school secretary is getting a bit ahead of herself.

Is she a mumnetter? There have been a number of poster on herer making the jump from Johnson making an announcement on Sunday with possibly, some easing of lockdown, to Johnson definitely ending lockdown on Sunday.

It's clearly just her opinion and she should not have sent such an irresponsible email.

Even if school were to go back soon, the government wouldn't be giving teaching staff and parents 13 hours notice in which to get the return organised; at least you'd hope not.

They do need notice
They need to explain procedures and expectations or class sizes, cleaning, how lessons might look. Expectations of shielded people, school staff, children, parents etc

They won’t just throw the doors open.

Some kids won’t have shoes that fit! Let alone uniforms etc.

She was irresponsible an I expect a HT correction at some point

The school may be open but there won’t be any teachers. Education unions have made it clear that if go to try to open schools they will not cooperate due to fears of safety of members.

IF the update Sunday follows Wales etc, schools won't be back yet and they will review in 3 weeks time. Then they need to give 3 weeks notice. Then is at least 6 weeks minimum.
