Covid

So it doesn’t look like the lockdown is going to be extended does it?

Just caught the daily news briefing. Despite a lot of people on here last week thinking there’s no way they’ll be easing the lockdown before the end of May (and I admit, I too thought this!) it looks like BoJo may announce relaxations of the lockdown Sunday, possibly taking effect as of Monday?

I am a bit confused though as though the majority of the criteria for relaxation looks like it’s being met, there are still 4000 new infections each day, which is the pretty much the same amount as at the start of this pandemic so surely that’s still too high?

I really hope you’re right and they do ease it. It’s becoming unbearable!

Mostly though hospitals seem to be coping well and will be able to deal with more cases that will come after lockdown eases.

I think we'll remain on lockdown for another 3 weeks and the announcement on Sunday will be about how things will change after that.

I think it will be extended for a further 3 on Thursday and Boris' chat on Sunday will be about the plans to ease at the end of the 3.

I inwardly hope you are right, although I do worry things will get back to peak times if too much leniency is allowed too fast. I think the government will want to ease into it as, lets face it, the death rates in the UK are really bad. They cant risk messing this up any more. I think we may have some small changes on Sunday, but nothing drastic.

I'm imaging as I've said previously we'll get another three weeks of lockdown but they'll reassess weekly.

@JustinMyJustin why is it unbearable?

I'm off the same opinion that it will be extended for 3 weeks.

They keep saying track n trace is very important to ease lockdown, that's being trialled on the Isle of Wight but won't be ready for mass rollout for weeks.

I do think there will be some easing onto allow more workplaces to open over the course of the next 3 weeks but that it will be very small changes.

Must admit I didn't watch the daily briefing, but I was getting the impression that they were going to extend it.

Though as there's an announcement of the road out of lockdown on Sunday I suspect it will either get extended for not as long or another 3 weeks, but Sunday we will have clear guidance about what will come after those 3 weeks. Just that will make it easier because at least we can see the light and just told that it is there.

You have to remember that cases aren’t the best indicator since they’ve changed the criteria to test in the first place a few times now. We had less cases per day when we were at our peak deaths.

The death numbers given out by the media aren’t for deaths that actually happened on that day (it takes a while for them to be confirmed) but a cumulative total. One of the deaths included in today’s figures was actually from the 30th March and it looks like England’s figures are hovering around 200 at the moment. www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/statistical-work-areas/covid-19-daily-deaths/

I think lockdown will be eased in stages that are easy to put back in place quickly if it starts looking like it’s too soon so I wouldn’t be surprised at some things changing over the next couple of weeks but not a full lift.

Not sure about England but I’m very doubtful they’ll be easing anything in Scotland any time soon . NS was asking us earlier to consider if drive through Costa coffee was seriously an essential journey - and NHS here are insistent we haven’t peaked at all, we are seeing a day on day increase still .

I think the rate of infections needs to slow, so weekly review makes sense

They will be looking at the situation in Germany very closely.

I think it will be extended. They clearly want to get track and trace and the app up and running first. Plus Scotland have already said theirs will be extended.
So I predict extension with perhaps a couple of minor tweaks to what we can do, followed by an actual plan for what will start happening next to really get things opening up.

Expecting a further three weeks, after today’s figures.

It looks like it's going to be extended in Scotland. Boris speech is supposed to be about getting people back to work/re-opening businesses.

Extension 3weeks but info about how things will begin to return to a more 'normal' existence after those 3 weeks IF we all stay on board with the lockdown.

OxanaVorontsova · 05/05/2020 20:09

be amazed if its not, no reason to ease it yet

Adelais · 05/05/2020 20:10

I think it will be extended one more time for another 3 weeks and then things will gradually start opening again.
