‘Is Boris off his head’ asks Europe

Zandathepanda · 04/05/2020 16:54

From the BBC news website:
^Today, Europe is hosting a virtual conference for world leaders and philanthropists in an effort to raise €7.5bn (£6.6bn; $8.3bn) to drive vaccine research.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is co-hosting the event, is expected to ask countries to pull together.^

So Boris is asking European countries to pull together. Whilst negotiating Brexit. Or not. Oh the irony.

You mean countries can only co-operate if they’re in a formal political union with one another? That’s going to be news to organizations like NATO, isn’t it?

It was co-hosted by UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Saudi Arabia, and the European Commission so presumably they were ok with it. Not sure what you think is ironic?

Surely they've been asking for some time as to whether he's completely out of his depth and generally a shambles, because you know, it's obviously the case.

He's a lying philandering piece of shit.

Eh? Loads of countries pull together for common goals but aren’t in a union together. I’m sure Australia and America manage to join forces with other countries on issues

Do you really mean "Europe"?

Do you see it op? They key words? Can you?

“World leaders”.

“Co hosting”

Why did you think he was only asking EU countries to pull together? What part of “world” leaders led to that conclusion? What part of co hosting led you to believe he was doing it alone?

Nah, Bluntness, just couldn't give up a chance to get a dig in at Boris and Brexit, and I thought all those that were for Remain were the intelligent ones, you know the ones that had excellent reading and comprehension skills. I imagine Japan, Canada and Saudi Arabia are delighted to know they are now part of Europe.

This is the headline from the BBC:

^14:40
Boris Johnson to ask European countries to pull together for vaccine^

I can imagine those European countries that are in the EU are ‘laughing’ at the irony of Boris talking about pulling together.

This was a world conference he surely was asking every country to share their finding to find a vaccine
Can’t imagine any would be small minded enough to think about anything else than finding a vaccine that works
This is bigger than anything else

Report
Zandathepanda · 04/05/2020 17:30

If you think about what vaccine research and implementation actually means it does require scientists/universities etc to be able to work together and also countries being able to trade freely together. It is freedom of movement and trade that is up in the air surely?

The irony is surely in it being Johnson, or indeed any person representing the UK government at the moment, having the brass neck to make any comment on how great it is for countries/commissions to 'pull together'. When practically the sole focus of said government has been, in Brexit, to be absolutely gung-ho about doing exactly the opposite?

Just read a list of all the European and international initiatives that the Brexit-backers have chosen to turn their backs on even when technically, they haven't needed to in order to still leave the Union - then look at someone like Johnson pontificating about how it's better to work together and keep a straight face (or not cry, of course).

OP's point doesn't need to have anything to do with 'Europe' though?

Except that of course the European Union's key place in discussions makes it all a little more poignant.

As well as thinking about all the ways in which the UK government is busily making sure that scientists and academics from the UK can't work as effectively within interntational groups in the future, of course.

SleightOfMind · 04/05/2020 17:40

What is contradictory, is the UK’s refusal to participate in the EU’s joint medical procurement plans during an actual pandemic, when it could have saved the lives of many medics, whilst David Frost is simultaneously attempting to negotiate our inclusion in such schemes after the transition period.

Baffling.

Zandathepanda the scientists, universities and other countries in the world can't work together and trade freely because they are not in the EU and don't benefit from EU freedom of movement?
