Covid

Where did you contract coronavirus from?

weepingwillow22 · 03/05/2020 04:55

I am interested in where people contract coronavirus from and in particular whether it is possible to get it from children. If you have been infected please reply with the letter below that most closely corresponds to where you think you picked it up.

Before lockdown
A: pre lockdown from work or any other activity ouside the home
B: pre lockdown from a family member or friend aged over 18
C: pre lockdown from a family member or friend aged 11 to 17
D: pre lockdown from a family member or friend aged 0 to 10
E: pre lockdown but source unknown

During lockdown
F: during lockdown from work outside the home
G: during lockdown from shopping or exercise outside the home
H: during lockdown from household member aged over 18
I: during lockdown from household member aged 11 to 17
J: during lockdown from household member aged 0 to 10
K: during lockdown source unknown

Thanks for your help with this. Feel free to add any other comments in addition to the letter. I will tally all responses at the end.

A I assume, no one else I know had symptoms until after me!

A I suspect it was contracted at my graduation ceremony end January. I wasn’t formally tested so cannot be sure it was Covid but I’ve never been so poorly with my breathing in my life. My chest is still not back to normal now.

You do realise people lie on the internet? And a) most people will be guessing they had it but won't be sure due to lack of testing and b) will be guessing where they contracted it.

I'm not sure what you think you're going to prove.

I am fully aware, thanks spaghetti and it is in no way scientific. I am not trying to prove anything but like many other threads on here I am just interested in peoples responses.

I think I had it but no idea where I caught it from. How would you know? It could have been from anywhere. My symptoms started pre lockdown and peaked within the first days of it.

I am convinced I had the virus and convinced I caught it from a child.

It was the day before lockdown and schools were to close. I work in a school (not teaching) and we were monitoring children. Some had already been sent home with what could have been virus or colds or whatever.
A younger child came, looking very, very unwell. On checking he had a high temperature, parents were called. While he sat in my office I realised he was coughing, it was unlike any cough I had heard before. Definitely dry, not a "habit", but every minute or two, over and over. He tried to talk but the cough kept getting in the way. He sat there for half an hour with my having to look after him until parents arrived.

Lockdown came and 8 days later I had what I think was the virus, although I can't tell as I wasn't tested. I had high temperature, some persistent coughing, red eyes, breathlessness, terrible aches and pains, temporary loss of taste and smell and was in bed for 3 days and felt very ill for a lot longer. I'm on my own, haven't seen anyone including family, didn't go anywhere else other than work (part-time, on my own in the office unless have to see a child like the one who came)….I can't think where else it had come from.

But the annoying thing is, I can't prove any of it...

I think your lived experience is good enough proof WanderingMilly. One day you might get a test for antibodies. Until then you might as well work on at least the balance of probabilities.

Of course you might have caught it another way.

I suspect I caught it doing a day with frequent London tube travel, but there are no doubt other possibilities. So that's an 'E' for OP.

Of course children can have the virus and pass it on. They are as infectious as an adult. So children are not sending out spores infecting everyone they pass, but if they are carrying and you have sustained close contact for 15+ minutes or come into contact with their bodily fluids and then touch your face you have a higher risk of becoming infected.

I'm reasonably confident we've had it we'll before lockdown, no testing so can't be sure. Couldn't say where it came from as both me and dh were working, dd at school and activities, we were going on play dates/days out, meeting friends and family so hundreds of potential places/people.

E. We started with symptoms on the 9th March. Suspect it may have been from a garage owner who had a burst colostomy when he was dealing with my husband ( not pleasant for him or my DH). He was Italian. That's the only source we can think of.

Well we haven't had tests to confirm we have had it, but for me B as I caught whatever it was from DH - 5 days after he started exhibiting symptoms. A - for him, we went out to meet friends for lunch the weekend of the Scotland/France rugby match, when it was well known that France had many cases so why the match and flights weren't cancelled should give pause for thought in the future. But yeah we went to a restaurant- loads of French people - presume he got the virus from that, or he was in an all day meeting with a lady who apparently coughed the whole time, so could have been that.

I do hope we've had it.

I am awaiting test results to see if I have CoVid. I am a key worker so been working outside of home. I could have got it from my students or whilst shopping. Haven't a clue!

F. Work at a supermarket. Iv started showing symptoms. The rest of the house have been home since lockdown I’m the only person leaving for work. All the tests are out of stock online and I live really far away from the drive through test centres. So I guess I’ll never know if I do have it or another virus. Will see if my husband comes down with it.

I suspect I had it but am not sure. I became poorly the week before lockdown with shortness of breath as main symptom and an intermittent but persistent cough. Oh and diahorrhea for over a week. But symptoms were nowhere near as bad as some I’ve seen on the internet. But then some have it with no symptoms.

So I would say A. The week before I got poorly I had lunch with a work colleague who a few days later became ill with confirmed coronavirus. I suspect I caught it from her. It was definitely present at work as another colleague has died from it and he died in about the first week of lockdown so would have been quite possibly at work when he caught it.

B. If it is confirmed to have been cv19 which it currently has not been. As I’m in the NHS I may get the antibody testing at a later date so will Hopefully know.

Probably from travelling to and from work.

I went into self-isolation the Saturday before lockdown.

Felt like crap even after I had supposedly recovered.

I've had it (tested) and got it from DH who had the symptoms before me but was not tested. DS1(7) had much much milder version of the same symptoms just before DH so can't help wondering if it came from him originally. Alternatively I guess DH picked it up from work as the timeline works in relation to when we locked down.

A, my husband and I both caught it when we went for a hospital scan to confirm my misscarrage - don't think we could have caught it anywhere else as we were stuck in the house for over a week or so before the scan while I waited to misscarry.
Although I would have caught it at some point as I work in A&E.

@rookiemere - back in March we were all aware that covid was starting to massively spread. Why on earth did your DH think it was a clever idea to spend the whole day in a room with someone who was persistently coughing? My clients had each sent emails to say anyone unwell should stay home in early March, my cousins missed a family funeral because they had coughs in early March, most were voluntarily social distancing by mid-March, surely nobody was just going "ah whatever" by mid-March!?!?
It's known that most people catch it from spending a significant time near someone else in the same room and he's clearly been close to someone infectious for a sustained time. The restaurant super-spreading they mapped has been from hospitality staff (Austria, New Zealand, etc).

F - am nurse caught it at work as did 4 others on my team. Wasn't tested as they weren't enough tests at the time and only A&E, ITU nurses were being tested. Even though we had the symptons and were told to isolate until symptom free.

Thankfully, my family were ok and we self isolated for 14 days.

That was 3 weeks ago and although recovered my lungs haven't full recovered am breathless at times when I wasn't before the virus.
