Sorry it’s behind a paywall.

Just heard about this on the radio. They are suggesting that Johnson will address the country next Sunday (10/5) with the roadmap, part of which will be primary schools returning on 1 June.

Not saying I believe it, just sharing the link.

well he is supposed to be announcing it next Thursday too depends on the paper you read isn't next Thursday the date it needs reviewing anyway? or was that the Thursday just gone?

im of the "i will believe he has said it when he says it" group because quite frankly newspapers are making it up as they go along right now

“To all pupils”. Right. My school has over 800 children, including 120 in reception alone, where 3/4 teachers are shielding. Sounds doable!

why primary? surely secondary are more important

What does it say about secondary schools?

This won’t be ‘schools back to normal’ as we know it. I think a lot of parents will be very disappointed.

A lot of maybe, could, depends on the science, possibly pushed back. A bold headline with lots of buts it’s the article. As concrete as the Daily Mails May 11th. They have literally made it up, but the headline states it as fact. You won’t know that if you can’t read the article (I can).

Yes it’s been leaked to the papers - announcement Thursday that school and workplaces to return after the May bank holiday at the end of the month

They've done with care homes, now on to school staff.

I could believe it if it was slowly getting some kids back in, but it’s the fact they’ve said “open to all children” that makes me think the story is utter bollocks (sadly).

@googlepoodle do you know for a fact it’s been leaked then? I think it’s more likely that the papers are just pushing whatever sells Hmm

Could be a case of say something enough times in the hope it becomes reality. Influence people by making them think it's inevitable. Which it isn't. At this stage we're far from being able to say when schools can safely go back. Be that June or later.

If true it'll be primary schools as that sorts "childcare" (!) so people can return to work

I think sometimes government ideas are leaked to the press to see what the reaction is. I would guess there are a number of different pathways being looked at right now.

The article itself doesn’t actually hold the conviction of the headline. It’s as wishy washy as the ST was when the said May. Could, may, possibly...

"Based on the current, reduced infection rate, Mr Johnson is hoping to put teachers on three weeks’ notice to reopen primary schools in England to all pupils on June 1, Whitehall sources said.

Year 10 and Year 12 pupils are then expected to form the first wave of secondary pupils returning to school at a later point, if such a move would be unlikely to increase the transmission rate over the threshold that Mr Johnson warned could result in a dangerous second peak."

The Welsh government have slapped them down for this and asked them to adjust the article. Flag flying at its finest. They are guessing and the Welsh government aren’t impressed.

I'm so anxious. I'm not shielding but I have a rare underlying health condition and have no clue how I'd cope if I caught the virus. I'm also overweight Sad. DD is 4 and has a horrible immune system, so bad that last year they thought she had Leukemia.
As much as I want her to go back to school, and the other DC's as well, I'm so scared about the consequences. I was really hoping for September so they might be able to find some kind of effective treatment.

The Barclay brothers (owners of the telegraph) live in the tax and Covid haven of Guernsey. They won't be impacted - either risk to life or economically by a second wave.

Another day, another made up newspaper headline trying to influence public opinion.

The clue is in it being all primary school pupils, for childcare so that parents can go back to work. This is what the right-wing papers are aiming for because they are worried about how much tax they’ll have to pay next year.

But surveys of parents persistently show they don’t want schools open, and the general population don’t want lockdown lifted.

Look out for articles in the same papers bemoaning ‘coronophobia’.

As I've posted on another thread, at the end of the article it states:

A Department for Education spokesman said: “Education Secretary Gavin Williamson has not set a date for schools reopening.
“Schools will remain closed, except for children of critical workers and vulnerable children, until the scientific advice indicates it is the right time to reopen and the five tests set out by Government to beat this virus have been met.”
