Rapid review of evidence.

Just noticed this in my timeline.

Oh that's a shame

There is only no evidence because nobody has done the necessary studies yet. This is far, far different from saying studies have shown no link. Whilst correlation does not prove causation there are certainly sufficient emerging studies to suggest supplementing your diet with vitamin D or going out for a walk in the sunshine would be a good thing to do.

Even if it doesn’t make any difference to Covid 19 being deficient in vitamin D does cause health issues so it’s well worth taking a supplement.

What OneInEight said.
There have been at least three studies appearing as preprints in the last week (Indonesia, New Orleans, UEA) which point to it being worth investigating further but nobody has had time yet! This review mustn't be taken as evidence of no connection.

Vitamin D is extremely cheap, or free if you go outside, so it seems sensible for people to be encouraged to take it. Unless it adversely effects certain medications or exasperates certain conditions, then what's the harm? It's good for the immune system anyway.

@OneInEight one issue is as vitamin D is cheap like with B group vitamins and iron the relevant studies will never be done.

People need to supplement but it will not make up for shit socioeconomic factors.

people like it because they think it's harmless and they can have control over it. Those things have nothing to do with whether or not it makes you have a less severe case of covid19.

Vitamin D is important, it helps to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy especially as many are getting little or no sunshine at the moment.

There are lots of research papers on Vitamin D and respiratory infections. Just not specifically on COVID 19 as it’s too early for conclusive meta analysis.

Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t all supplement, as advised through the winter months and try and get some sunshine (or supplement) in the summer. It is not actually a vitamin, it’s a hormone and deficiency can cause problems and is linked to some illnesses/disease.

The reason I am interested comes from a couple of small studies which show a correlation of very low vitamin D and severity of Covid-19 disease. It is too soon to know if this is true - hence the need for more and larger studies. I totally agree the drug companies are not going to rush to fund any investigations but I would expect that governments or charities will given how many lives could potentially be saved & given we have so few other ideas. Healthfood & supplement manufacturer's would also have a very strong interest. A full drug trial is very expensive but a preliminary investigation to see if Covid-19 patients have low Vitamin D levels in the UK would be very cheap and very quick.

Looking more closely at the paper it seems they searched Google Scholar on April 4th, which for a paper that came out on May 1st with the intensity of research that is going on at the moment strikes me as more than a bit shit.

Um, Vitamin D industry is worth MegaBucks. Big Pharma is very involved in promoting Vitamin D supplements. Why in the world would you think it wasn't??

Hmmm, that is the opposite of what other studies have found

There’s a few things coming out about vitamin D, obviously non of it has been through full peer review yet.

Indian study out today, 176 covid 19 patients (previously checked serum levels).

Same findings as the New Orleans, Indonesian and Philippines studies:

100% of critical patients less than 75 years old had Vitamin D insufficiency

5th Vit D3 study from Belgium.

Males showed markedly higher percentage of vitamin D deficiency ..Vit D deficiency is a possible risk factor for severe infection in males. Vit D3 supplementation might be an inexpensive, accessible and safe mitigation for covid
