Wiping Down Shopping

This might have already been covered but without trawling through I just thought I’d ask anyway.

So...when you get your shopping home (or delivered) are you all cleaning every single item? If so, what are you using to clean with? Would an antibacterial wipe be suffice or does it need to be bleach? I am wiping things over with antibacterial wipe but a bit half heartedly tbh. It’s quite a daunting task having to wipe every single item before putting it away in the fridge/freezer/cupboard.
Just wondered how everyone else is tackling this.

Actually I haven’t been cleaning it. Maybe I should be...

Yes I use a spray bottle that has diluted bleach

I never thought I'd say this as I've been pretty laid back overall, but yes I do. Hot water and washing up liquid, sponge lathered and all packaging wiped over and left on the draining board for a bit before putting in fridge/freezer/cupboards. No idea if it's doing anything but I haven't caught it yet!

Btw, anti bac wipes won't work on a virus.

I remove everything that can be from its packaging. Anything else is wiped down with dettol spray. Fruit/ veg is washed as it would be anyway. It is a complete faff but its only once a week and I have a vulnerable child at home so it seems worth it to me. I do hate having to do it though, makes me feel like a mad woman

I clean my shopping.

Either soapy water and a rinse, or disinfectant. Depends on what it is.

Though to be fair from about 9 we always cleaned cans in our house.

You get quicker the more often you do it.

Dettol spray and isopropyl alcohol here

Anti bac wipes do work on viruses, almost universally.

But I think it's overkill to be wiping down shopping unless you are in the very high risk category.

Just washing my hands after its put away, nothing else.
If it was a problem a lot of totally isolating /sheilding people would be getting I'll and it would certainly be in the news or featured all over ther internet. But this doesn't seem to be happening.

No.

No, washing hands after it's been put away. I disinfect all my work surfaces each night before bed anyway. But not items individually.

Not washing or wiping or quarantining anything .. we’re all washing hands frequently and only going out for exercise/unavoidable appointments etc. I’ve been wfh since the second week of March, dd was homeschooled anyway and dh mostly works from home unless he’s travelling (which has obviously stopped for the time being). As far as I’m aware, there have been no known cases of transmission via a contaminated surface and that the risks are theoretical, so I’m not going to damage my mental health further by going down the bleaching shopping route

I'm wiping everything with a solution of washing up liquid and disinfectant - takes bloody ages too.

DressingGownofDoom · 30/04/2020 09:57

Nope. If these are my last months on earth due to this pandemic, I'm not going to spend them cleaning the shopping.

@DressingGownofDoom that made me chuckle Grin

But what do you do with the fresh stuff? Do you bleach the apples and courgettes as well??? Isn't that harmful?

Report
Bagelsandbrie · 30/04/2020 10:01

Nope. I just put stuff away. I think the risk of getting it from packaging is tiny.

Report
Bagelsandbrie · 30/04/2020 10:01

@DressingGownofDoom that’s how I feel as well.

Not washed anything. It seems a miniscule chance you will get it from a tin of beans.

I’ve not been wiping it. I’m shopping for 3-4 households so it would be a mammoth task!

I'm higher risk and we're not cleaning anything.
