I know in reality its not the end of the world and it's nothing compared to how others are suffering right now.

Just before lockdown, we were viewing houses to buy for our first home. We'd scrimped and saved and gone with out to get our deposit together whilst renting and were so excited.

Now the reality is that I'll probably end up redundant and having to use our savings to get by until I can find more work meaning we'll have to start again (or at least be pushed back some).

Even if we didn't what's the likelihood of getting a decent mortgage after this, for a while anyway?!

I'm so gutted and I can't stop feeling upset about it.

Is anyone else upset about things that aren't the end of the world in comparison but you're struggling with none the less?

That’s shit timing for you. It may all balance out, with significantly lower house prices making houses more accessible for you.

I shouldn't have looked because it's made me feel even worse! But I checked our (or who would have been anyway) mortgage providers AIP system the other day and they are now asking for minimum 20% deposit.

They aren't all like that I'm sure but I'm just so worried this is the way it'll be now. I'll never save that much

What if you'd spent your savings on a deposit for a home just before this pandemic arose and then been made redundant? State benefits wouldn't have paid your mortgage. You would have had to use your redundancy payment to pay your mortgage. Redundancy is hard whenever it strikes.

You, however, don't even know that you will be made redundant. If you don't get made redundant, why do you think getting a decent mortgage will be a problem? It sounds to me, not that you are just considering possible scenarios, but that you tend to be negative.

There is no point in worrying and being upset about things that have not happened. You need to turn around your thinking and start looking forward to house-hunting again when restrictions are lifted. You'll feel better by focussing on good things.

NotEverything, yes you're right of course. I guess I more just meant I'm upset that this whole thing happened at all, not that I'd prefer to have just bought a house when this all started.

I'm just frightened of having to start from scratch again.

No I don't know I'll be made redundant but it's not me just being negative, I work for a small company that has been particularly hard hit and haven't been there long.

But yes you're right I need to think more positively. It's just hard when all you hear is negative right now!

That’s very bad luck, OP. But don’t give up hope. Yes, you might be knocked back financially but everyone is going to feel this - even people lucky enough to keep their jobs will pay more tax, be squeezed harder at work.

Don’t forget we are facing down the barrel of Brexit too, I certainly would not be making major financial decisions right now.

Bide your time, who knows what will happen in the future?
