Did anyone else pick up on the "make a will now" comment on the 10pm news tonight? Bit somber.

I remember seeing a bit about talking about death but didn't hear them say making wills ? Was that when they were talking to the terminally ill lady, I thought they were talking more about making your wishes known in relation to covoid. I turned to dh and told him I'd seen a lovely natural burial ground that I used to pass on the way to a previous job last year.

Nope I was on the phone, care to elaborate?

Everyone should have a will anyway!

I made mine just after we went into lockdown, I also made a list of important financial stuff and phone numbers and I’ve told my son where to find them

I keep seeing ads about making a will on my fb page from a large cancer charity

Well

  1. if you have children, you should have a will. No matter what age

  2. Do you know who the majority of advertiser's are at the moment? Government. Life insurance. Will 'Services'.
(Hence why Mumsnet tried to bet on the goodwill of their users.) Servers don't run themselves.

  3. If the BBC is running a story with the focal point of 'no will' then in their throwaway I can imagine they would remind people to make a will? Esp since a majority of their viewers will be 'of a certain age' usually.

Can you make a will over the phone? I'd assume not, but who knows? You'd need someone to witness you signature, but that could be a neighbour from across the hedge!

No you can’t make a will over the phone or over Skype, it must be in person.

I gather solicitors have been incredibly busy with people making wills in the last 2 months.

You can instruct a solicitor by phone to draft the Will but you would need to physically sign the finalised hard copy document and have it witnessed.

If you are a member of a trade union they often have free or subsidised will writing services as long as it’s not a complicated will. I did mine free online with Unison and then just printed it out and got some colleagues at work to witness my signature at a safe distance
