Posters who want lockdown lifted

I'm seeing an increase in threads where the poster is impatient for exact details of an exit strategy (even though we can all imagine what it will involve - phased re-opening of some stores and businesses etc,,). Plus we're hearing the usual cries of lockdown is hurting society more than it's helping.
Spain saw a spike in new infections today - the highest since their peak 3 weeks ago. To these posters I'd like to ask what your thread titles will be during our spikes in infections and deaths after this lockdown?
What I'm really getting at is that you don't seem to understand that we're in this for the long haul. There is no quick fix, back to normal.

Are you saying we stay in lockdown until there's a vaccine then? Even if it takes years? If not, what are you suggesting?

I think many of those pushing for lockdown to be lifted are doing so presisely becuase they realise we are in this for the longhaul.

Lockdown was always going to be a temporary measure to buy time to get prepared. It is also not an all or nothing scenario, so freedoms will be introduced and then may be taken away again as the numbers change.

Exactly. This isn’t sustainable for the long haul. Happy to do it for another month but it looks like the NHS is coping (mainly by not admitting people until they are at death’s door).

Most of us will get this virus at some point. We manage the spread, try to protect the vulnerable but we can’t stay in lockdown indefinitely. Aren’t we just prolonging the inevitable?

Lockdown won’t make this virus go away unless nobody leaves their houses for about 6 months which won’t happen:

Lockdown needs to be lifted at some point, unless we are to be in lockdown until a vaccination is produced. This is completely unrealistic. At some point, we need fo move to extended social distancing. The fact is we have to get on with our lives around the virus, and if our hospitals, ie, Nightingale have space, then clearly the lockdown is effective and has had the desired effect.

We have to exit the lockdown at some point- sitting around and waiting whilst cancer patients miss reviews, routine healthcare goes ignored, abuse victims get murdered and people’s mental health drains is neither sensible or productive. There is no quick fix, I understand that- just a new way of life until the vaccine is hopefully in circulation. Full lockdown, however, is not suitable for the long term.

Well this can’t go on forever can it?? It has to end soon.

What is it you want op? Us all to hide in our homes till a vaccine is found? Because it’s not going to happen. We need to be able to live not simply survive. You also have to remember the very low death rate. Overall if you get it, we have a 99 percent chance of surviving it. If not more.

Agree if this was magically going to be gone by September fair enough, but it’s not. And we can’t lock down for a year. We need to be able to manage it. Not hide from it.

However I’d also add op, you have personal choice. You personally can lock down till you see fit.

I will be so happy when lockdown is lifted, I can’t really get to grips with the whole economy dying a sudden death. It would be much better for the elderly and vulnerable to stay at home with everyone else still working and paying taxes.

Or they could be allowed to go and enjoy their lives.

No, OP, what you don't seem to understand is that we ARE in this for the long haul. Which is precisely why we need to begin to move to the next stage. The current situation is not sustainable.

It's not that I particularly want lockdown to be lifted, it's the not knowing that I'm struggling with. Tell me I won't be allowed out of the house until September and the DC won't be allowed back to school until the following January, and then only on half days or whatever.

That's absolutely fine, and I'll deal with it. It's the 'it's too soon to say/we can't give any indication of what will happen next/we need to focus on staying at home' that's driving me slightly mad. If I had an idea of what the future looked like, rather than just this limbo I'd feel a lot less unsettled.

Personal choice is actually important here.

If the op or anyone else feels they wish to lock down for the next twelve to eighteen months then they can crack on and do so.

What they can’t dictate is the rest of us should too.

This. I want to make sure there is an NHS at the end of this, schools for children to go to, social work back to usual. I'd much prefer the money spent on keeping people furloughed be spent on helping the vulnerable isolate.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/04/2020 13:38

Lockdown isn’t sustainable, keeping people from seeing eachother, kids from learning and people from earning. At some point the lockdown will be the cause of more deaths than the virus.
All along the government has explained we are trying to flatten the curve not eliminate it.
Most of society would like to understand the UKs game plan- that’s not unreasonable!

thepeopleversuswork · 24/04/2020 13:38

Agree that there’s no quick fix OP and that the floodgates are not going to magically open and turn the clock back to February.

But that doesn’t mean we can carry on like this indefinitely. The economy will not be sustainable and a point will come where the negatives outweigh the protections lockdown affords the population and the NHS.

At some point: and I have no idea when, there will have to be some carefully managed relaxation.

This needs to repeated on a loop until the message gets through.

Lilac absolutely they could. It should be their decision to make.

That's the whole point. There is no quick fix. Lockdown will NOT get rid of this virus. We need to learn to live with it until a vaccine. We cannot stay in lockdown for a year+ until we find one. We need to look at ways to come out of lockdown and carry on with life somewhat, whether that's by track and trace testing, social distancing, mandatory mask wearing, or other methods.

Have you seen the Office for National Statistics on death rates aside from Covid. They have rocketed. Far more people being killed as a result of the lockdown compared with those dying of Covid. The ONS stats are more the daily rubbish as they draw it from death certificates.

Wait until we start adding in suicides and the deaths from cancer patients not being treated. This is utter madness

I’d be happy to take my chances catching the virus....I feel the odds would be in my favour. Yes, I appreciate some younger people have died but overall I’d give it a gamble.

I’m abiding to lockdown and I understand the need to manage any peaks so the nhs isn’t overwhelmed.

But it isn’t sustainable long term, we will fuck the economy. Best to come out of it for a few weeks now, maybe go back into lock down again if needed....and repeat. Though we need the govt to sort out comprehensive testing programme.

Even a friend of mine who is high risk and shielded says she’d happily take the risk rather than live like this for another year.

Obviously we're not going back to normal. But we do need to change the parameters of lockdown at some point.

Or..... what? What's your alternative plan?

It does seem like madness marie, only hindsight will tell but I wonder whether our future selves will see the severe conditions we are living under as a huge overreaction.
