The fifth condition to end lockdown

I'm confused about the fifth condition to end lockdown:
Being confident any adjustments would not risk a second peak

Surely there is definitely going to be a second peak without a vaccine? And multiple peaks as covid 19 is highly infectious?

I thought the lockdown might be eased after 3 weeks, but are we potentially looking at years of this?

I think they'll relax the lockdown in a couple of weeks and then we'll get a second peak, worse than the first as it'll be like setting a load of teenagers free at last, parks and beauty spots will overflow and we'll be right back where we started.
If they can coordinated mother nature to piss it down for the lifting of lockdown it might help.

@Troels I said to dp that they'll check the weather forecast for the weekend of the 8th May before making a decision. I think though it will be small shops & garden centres only at first and still distancing for over 70's etc

We obviously aren’t looking at lockdown for years, however I think social distancing should be put in place for as long as necessary.

Well the economy won’t survive a year of lockdown and no government is going to fuck the future of its country like that. So it will not be for a year.

Lockdown will more than likely be eased to some degree after these three weeks. I don’t think everywhere will be rammed, people are scared of this illness. People say now oh I want to go to the beach etc but you open that door and say right you can go but the virus is still out there. I don’t believe everyone will rush out tbh. Yes some will but enough will probably stay home to keep the numbers down.

They won’t open everything at once anyway, they just won’t. They will open some things at a time like say garden centres and coffee shops (as long as tables are 2m apart etc) can open, then they will open more.....and on it goes

I don’t think we will have any massive gatherings for quite a while so no sport, concerts, festivals etc. I think social distancing in supermarkets will stay for a while even when lockdown is eased. Offices than can work from home will be encouraged to do that for a while yet

The plan was never to stay inside and hope the virus goes away. The plan is to control the numbers so our NHS isn’t over loaded, bottom line is people are going to die of this virus as we don’t currently have a vaccine. Government just has to control the numbers of people with it to protect our wonderful health service

The options aren't "indefiinite lockdown" or "second peak" - there's a middle ground. It's suppression as a strategy.

Mind you, with the number of mumsnetters who are vehemently against the idea of being tracked in any way, plus those who are adamant that the only option is herd immunity, it could well be a self-fulfilling prophecy Sad

I think you're mixing up second wave with second peak. Yes a second wave is inevitable without a vaccine, but incremental reduction in lockdown can reduce the chance of a peak.

Watching Newsnight yesterday it seems that ending lockdown is imminent.

Watching Newsnight yesterday it seems that ending lockdown is imminent.

What was said and by who, to make you think this?

None of the cabinet talks have suggested this is the case.

That will do have opposite effect! Those that would have been drawn to the outdoors in large numbers will just be drawn indoors instead to parties at each others houses, which would be far worse!

I reckon young people and ignorants will be out en masse Sad
