Covid

After these three weeks...

...what do you think will happen?

NOT with regards to schools, I think we all know those probably aren’t going back in three weeks and there’s too many threads speculating anyway.

I’m just interested if people think that the lockdown will be lifted or extended, or somewhere in between where some things open.

I think it will be extended. I can't see that in 3 weeks we will suddenly start opening everywhere again.

Some places might open, but I don't know how they'll decide? Like opening non essential shops but keeping cafe and restaurants closed? But then would they have to enforce some kind of guidance on limiting customers etc.

Extended. Easier for the gov to say “oh it will be another few weeks then after that a few more” than risk rioting and social breakdown by saying it’s going to be 6 weeks more upfront.

Im struggling to understand the rationale behind keeping the lockdown for everyone going unless it is going to be until there is a vaccine. Surely it would make sense to just lockdown the vulnerable? And the rest of us have some restrictions.

Coronavirus is clearly highly infectious, so we are definitely getting multiple waves of it until there is a vaccine. In The Times they keep talking about avoiding a second wave - well they only way to do that would have been to lockdown in January - there is no avoiding it now.

Extended.
Raab said, "At LEAST three weeks".
Giving us a signal that it will be further,
It's under a three week review, and will be extended for a period they deem fit when they have more data at the review.

Isn't it to stop pressure on the hospitals? If we came out of lockdown now and opened everywhere up but only locked down the vulnerable. Everyone would still flock out to the cinemas, shops, cafes etc, and it would then cause an immense pressure on the NHS? I could be wrong, but I think they're just doing it to try prevent the hospital being too overwhelmed.

I imagine it rather depends on how the numbers stack up.

If yesterday's numbers were a true indication that number of deaths are falling dramatically, rather than a one off low figure, then I imagine we might be looking at a very tentative start to lifting some of the lockdown restrictions on certain shops, for instance.

However, if the deaths don't drop significantly, it will probably just be extended for another three weeks.

This situation cannot continue until there's a vaccine, something we don't actually know is a possibility, but at the same time, getting the whole country out of lockdown is going to have to been a long slow process, otherwise we're just going to go back to square one with the danger that the NHS could be overwhelmed.

I hope we stayed locked down.
I don’t have to see my mother in law and it’s an absolute delight 😂

seriously though I’m guessing after this three weeks, they’ll say another two weeks or so, probably repeat that a few times!

This absolutely.

covetingthepreciousthings you're right. The lockdown is only to reduce pressure on the nhs. I don't understand why some people think it will 'go away' or that we can 'stop it'. Its a virus fulfilling its biological imperative to spread. And it's doing it very effectively. All we can do is manage our response to that.

They will have to remove restrictions slowly and in stages. More people will catch it as a result but not in unmanageable numbers.

We can't keep the country locked down indefinitely. I know people will cry, "but people are dying!" Yes, they are and that's, obviously, awful but those of us who don't still need to earn money to keep a roof over our heads and to eat.

Hopefully places will start being allowed to open again such as shops but with social distancing in place like the supermarkets have.
In regards to restaurants/cafes then I am not totally sure maybe less tables so there is distance between each table?!
Places like b and q and other suppliers that did shut are reopening under the social distancing this week. I also noticed next online has reopened as well as river island so they must have put social distancing in place in there warehouses.
Places that will require more thought to them are cinemas/kids indoor play places etc.
Schools should not go back until September.
After this 3 week ends I hope the sensible decision is made and places are allowed to open with special measures in place it can be done if everyone is more self aware Smile

I think that DIY stores and garden centres maybe allowed to open with queueing and distancing like supermarkets so that we can shop for not just essentials.

There seems to be a lot of talk today about being past the peak. Obviously that’s the peak of the first wave, I imagine there will be second and subsequent waves.

As others have said, there will still need to be significant social distancing given a return to BAU would cause the infections to ramp up at speed again. However I do wonder whether the current lockdown will be softened at the end of this period.

puffinandkoala · 21/04/2020 14:20

I think it will be eased very slightly. Garden centres open for example. And household tips. And being able to visit family.

DIY stores are already open for click and collect.

This all depends on whether there's a surge in infections in the countries which are easing their lockdowns like Austria for example.

I think extended for another 3 weeks after this, then some workplaces allowed to reopen on 1st June - shops that can allow social distancing, factories, offices. But not pubs, clubs or cinemas.

NeurotrashWarrior · 21/04/2020 14:34

Unfortunately I now think it will be extended.

I think they will only lift things a little when a decent amount of ppe is available first for hospitals and secondly for other key workers and then also for the general public (masks).

I think it's going to have to be made here, but getting raw materials may be a challenge.

Sometime though people are going to have to be allowed to buy stuff that is deemed not essential like clothes, aren't some supermarkets not allowing access to clothing aisles because they aren't essential.

I think it will be extended, but under weekly review.

If we are following Italy (which we are very closely) then we’ll start to relax lockdown around the 18th May.

I think it'll still be in place but I imagine quite a few places will reopen.
My dad works for a carpet company and is currently furloughed. They are due back to work on Monday with social distance measures in place.
The likes of kfc, b&q, Burger King etc are already reopening with social distance measures and I reckon in three weeks a fair few more will do too.
My mum works for a printing company, they too are off back next week with social distance measures in place.
Large gatherings is a way off yet if at all this year.
That's just my opinion anyway.

I hope that we may be able to visit non vulnerable close relatives but I appreciate that can't really be enforced,

Stop kidding yourselves. Look at Italy, it has all already happened here. They say 3, then just before the three is over, they add another three, and then another three....they may open a shop here and there or an industry that is about to tank, but I reckon a very minimum or six weeks' total lockdown. I have just finished the first two months here in Italy. Nothing is changing at least until 8 May and on that date my biggest hope is that our lockdown will become more like your lockdown which is actually pretty great from where I'm stood because you can take your kids for a walk. My kids haven't been beyond our garden gate since February.

I think it will be extended, I also think there's a few people about who think after this three weeks we can expect it lifted and that the public might get a bit less obedient in future. I suppose it depends on the numbers we see and how well they explain the plan to the masses.

I'm assuming 12 weeks in total, they are just announcing it 3 weeks at a time to try and avoid civil unrest.

Now the furlough scheme has been extended until the end of June, I reckon the there may be a staggered release then. I hope it's sooner but I can't see it.

Lazypuppy · 21/04/2020 15:08

@Riv12345 the extra deaths are backdated as some are only recognised once a week by ONS. Doesn't mean it doubled.

I hope they lift lockdown after the 3 weeks in someway, let people ses gamily etc.
The longer this goes on the more people that will break the rules As they are getting bored/annoyed with the restrictions

The economy needs the lockdown to be lifted.
