August Cruise!

We’re meant to be going on a cruise in August with extended family. My parents are taking us and want to know what we think about going. If the cruise co. end up cancelling they will get full refund, if they cancel they get some kind of voucher but my mum’s saying the same trip in a years time is already booked up..

Two of the wider family have underlying health conditions, I received the 12 week letter and both my parents are in their 70’s. I would definitely rather postpone but then it seems unfair on the other family members who are not vulnerable.

My mum doesn’t want to upset anyone and doesn’t know what to do and has asked us all to comment.

Is it a time for me to be completely honest and put myself first and say I don’t want to go in August? I’m not very good at doing this like this but to be honest a cruise is the last place I want to be right now!

Any thoughts welcomed or anyone else in a similar position?

Not for all the money in the world would I go on a cruise! Risking illness with very little medical help, or being stranded for weeks on end and stuck inside those tiny cabins! No chance

I know @Feckinlego I feel that I would be anxious the whole time🙁

I wouldn't want to go. I highly highly doubt that cruises will be back up and running any time soon anyway.

@inwood that’s what I thought but it sounds like they haven’t cancelled it as yet. I thought they would all be cancelled..

I wouldn't go and I'd just say that - "Sorry but we aren't up for going this year." And leave the cancellation details down to them to decide. If I were them, I'd hang on for the company to cancel and get the refund. I can't imagine there'll be any cruises happening this summer. But if they want the credit note, I wouldn't be put off by how next year's booking situation is looking, I think things will be very different by then anyway.

I very much doubt it will be going ahead. Cruise companies are in the shit big time, my DH has (very luckily for us) just left working for one, I can't see cruises in general recovering from this.

They haven't cancelled yet because they are desperately trying ti hold onto every penny, their losses are going to be huge. You might get your money back if you cancel now, I wouldn't be holding my breath though sorry.

I think the decision will be made for you - I don't see cruise lines being back up and running by August.

We love cruises but no way would I be making plans to go on one until about 2022! They will be cancelling I’m sure and she’ll get the money back if she waits.

We are meant to be going on a cruise in end of june/july. It said in the paper that all sailing has been suspended for 100 days- meaning we definitely won’t be going, but Royal Caribbean have only cancelled trips at the moment up until June 11th. I’m gutted as this was going to be our first family holiday. Hopefully we can swap to next year instead

My parents were due to go on a cruise this august and the final balance needed paying this week. They have decided to cancel and loose the deposit rather then wait for the cruise line to cancel and rebook next year. Coronavirus will still be around in August, even if not the number of cases we are seeing now, it will still be there until a vaccine is found.

Hell, no. I love cruises but wouldn't want to set foot on a cruise ship for the foreseeable future.

I expect yours will end up being cancelled.

August cruises probably won’t go ahead. If your parents cancel now though they may lose their money. If the cruise line cancels, they’ll get the money back.
