From what I've read most people who survive covid-19 will have no lasting damage. People who become critically ill, however, as Boris did, often incur irreversible damage to the lungs, heart, and nervous system.

Lung function can apparently be reduced by 20-30%, leaving people out of breath after a brisk walk. An athlete, soldier, police officer, or fire fighter so effected could kiss their careers goodbye.

This isn't news, this was being said right at the beginning of the outbreak in the UK. The only upside is that smokers have very damaged lungs, but they repair themselves very quickly when they give up smoking for good, so maybe the lungs will recover from covid in time, too.

It's early days. Who is to say that damaged lungs won't regain full function with time?

It's very early days. We didn't know this virus existed in December.

A friend of ours who is a doctor says the kidneys and liver, amongst other organs, can all be damaged by the virus, so she recommends not drinking alcohol for a while after the symptoms ease to give the liver the best chance of recovery.

Not all sufferers are getting respiratory symptoms. Some are having gastrointestinal problems.

Nobody knows whether we can be sure that sufferers are immune to it, and if so for how long.

So many unknowns.

Lungs can - and do - recover. It can take up to a year. We don’t know enough about this virus to know if it permanently leaves lung damage.
