Is it ok to get a gardener in at the moment? I've had a quick look online and a newspaper article suggests it's fine as long as social distancing can occur (it can).
I won't be outside with them (except to tell them what I'd like done from 2m or more away). My neighbours rarely use their garden but gardener will only need next to their fence for around 15-30 mins anyway as most of the work is at the other end of the garden which has no neighbour. The gardener is happy to come and wants to work as his company is suffering. I have a side gate and an outside tap so he won't need to enter my house. I have informed him that social distancing is a must.

Is this ok?

Absolutely fine, as long as social distancing is observed and it's helping a business stay afloat I would say go for it!

My neighbours had their regular bloke round last week to do whatever he does (can’t see due to high hedge). There’s a fine line to be trodden here between keeping safe and supporting small businesses, but I think the circumstances you describe sound fine.

I wish I could find one right now! We were planning to have a friend gardener/builder lay grass in our (very small) front garden and add a fence around the edge so we could use it without everyone driving past seeing in but he was very reluctant when we asked and gave a million excuses why it couldn’t be done even though we’d have zero contact with him.
I’d go for it
