Self-employed grant

MyPartInHistory · 18/04/2020 12:39

If you are self employed and you think you should be entitled to the grant, have you been contacted by the government yet?

I have heard that others have been contacted but I have not yet received any notification. My income has fallen off a cliff, so I am hopeful that I might receive something.

I am over £50k and Sunak has decided those honest enough to disclose over £50k profits don't get a penny whereas those over that who set up a limited company to avoid tax can get it and those who are employees even on £100k a year can., Not a very fair world but there we are. Let us hope those of us who don't get a penny don't have to pay higher taxes next year.

Well, my self employed earnings are under £50k Xenia. Everything I earn is properly declared and I pay all the taxes I owe.

Nope. I should qualify but haven’t heard. Nobody else in the freelance groups I’m in have heard yet and tbh we never expected to till mid May at the earliest.
I’m not sure what led you to believe you’d hear sooner but I don’t think that’s right.

I think so. The information suggests you have to wait until you are contacted. If there are others in my situation who haven't been contacted, I'll feel reassured.

Right from the start they’ve said the grant will be early June.

Museumum, thank you, that is reassuring. I wasn't expecting to be paid anything yet, but I do know of other self employed workers who have been told that their case is being looked at.

I have had two. Friends have just had theirs. We think it is being done alphabetically, I am early in the alphabet, one friend is an F and has has hers, another friend is a W and hasn't heard yet.

MyPartInHistory · 18/04/2020 12:49

Okay, thank you. It looks as if they have started to contact people but won't get to everyone before mid-May.

No, I've not been contacted yet assist from the first email that said, we'll contact you as soon as it's possible to apply or something like that. I think I only got that email because I have requested email notifications from my gateway account.

MyPartInHistory · 18/04/2020 12:50

It can't be alphabetically as one of my self-employed friends knows others that have received letters who are after her in the alphabet, and she has yet to hear.

My understanding is that the government will contact you if you qualify based on your tax returns for last 3 years
They aim to contact by mid May with payment by start of June
I don't qualify as profits in excess of £50 k
Not sure why self employed are being treated differently from employees

Pipandmum · 18/04/2020 12:52

Just read in the news this morning that the HMRC aims to contact everyone eligible by mid May, so don't panic.

I haven't been contacted and neither have any of the people I know in the industry I'm in - we're pretty much all self employed. My surname begins with D.

So, it's a mystery!!

Ltd co directors don't get anything Xenia

Report
delilahbucket · 18/04/2020 13:38

I haven't been contacted, early alphabet surname, mid alphabet NI. That said, even first class post is taking at least a week, with second much longer.
It's expected that self employed will have savings for if they cannot suddenly work. Fair enough, some live hand to mouth, but if you are in that low an income bracket then you are likely to qualify for universal credit. I would be very surprised if someone is on over £50k and living pay day to pay day.

I'm not sure how correct this is but thought it might help.

A friend of mine can't get the grant as although self employed, she doesn't have premises. Could be right?
