I'm recording it but I've seen others that have highlighted the trade in pangolins. They are in incredibly cute and peaceful creatures. I hope that one silver lining of covid 19 is the raised awareness of the conservation efforts to protect them.

I was actually really pleased when I heard covid 19 came from pangolins. I just hope people will leave them alone now. They are such amazing special little creatures.

I was watching it, but I thought eurgh, they are all scaly and revolting - maybe they will all be culled because they might be transporters of the Virus 🦠. We don’t want them starting off another epidemic any time soon 😷. I can’t believe people eat them as a delicacy 🤮.

Horrible post, Mumtofourandnomore, the virus is indiscriminate and is killing humans so what does that tell you? Humans are the revolting parasites, not pangolins.

There were a few articles in some of the newspapers this week about a study at a university in I think Canada, that put forward a theory that it was dogs that might have been the link between bats, humans and the virus in China and not pangolins. That stray dogs, or dogs sold in the markets? in Wuhan were more likely to be the connection.

Yes some really cruel and vicious treatment of animals in China and other parts of the world too. Sickening and I can't watch those kind of videos, too upsetting . But really hope there is more awareness, and pressure for changes and laws soon

Yes but maybe now with much more awareness about this bigger pandemic things will improve. After this crisis, which is gigantic compared to the first SARS outbreak, China will still want to trade again with the rest of the world. I'm not sure people will be so forgiving this time.

The movie Contagion is now reaching a mass audience, especially now its available on Netflix. That movie, which I recommend people to watch they haven't seen it, does have a scene of live animals in a market. It's only a short scene but I think people will be taking notice of that kind of thing at the moment, along with information in the news media

I never even heard of them before the virus. Weirdly enough, most of my close and extended family knew of this species.

The Chinese have used the worlds creatures as their own personal larder and pharmacy for too long. It needs to stop now. They've pushed so many animals to the brink of extinction and got away with it because it's their culture. They killed nearly all the Asian Pangolins so then went over to Africa and started taking their pagngolines - what right do they have. Thats not even getting started on what they do to sharks.

We need an international law that protects all wild animals.

This virus was our fault but the animals. There are plenty of animals that are farmed and kept disease free humans never needed to seeking ever more unusual food sources. We have enough.

International laws do exist but are difficult to enforce due to lack of funding and political will.
We should be using this pandemic as a force for change but we won't. We'll throw a lot of money at reacting in the moment, and once we have C19 in control again we'll go back to ignoring all the issues which both caused it and make it worse. From the trade in wild animals to the obesity epidemic and air pollution, these myriad issues are far far harder to deal with as they require long term behavioural change rather than short term soundbites. 'Save the NHS' gets a whole variety of people on board, from the thoughtful and caring, to the bullying and self-important. 'Try to eat a bit less but more healthily and maybe drive a bit less and walk more and maybe think about trying to support local manufacture if you can instead of China to show disapproval of their record in wild animal trade etc' is just too dull and will never get any votes (either upvotes on SM or at an election) !
And we can't tell China to stop its trade in animals and animal parts because our globalised economies are inter-dependent and China make the stuff we want far more cheaply than we can.
Glad people have discovered how completely cute pangolins are though (trying to see a ray of happiness!)

Imagine looking after an animal that requires you to spend 5-6 hours a day walking around after it while it feeds. Talk about commitment.
