When do we think on the basis of what we are being told about possible exit strategy, it will be possible to drive from Scotland to south coast to stay with family?

That's the length of Great Britain, not the UK.

A line down from Scotland to South coast England is the length of Great Britain and the UK!

I don't think we know this yet. That's not a helpful answer, but I'd just say you can't really fret now.
Do you have a trip scheduled? I feel your pain - I'm 350 miles away from my elderly parents. I can ring them, and FaceTime them on the rare occasions they can make it work Grin. But it's not the same.

It's funny you should say that as my husband left Abroath this morning to travel down to Portsmouth.

My best guess is mid June to Aug. Somewhere in there.

I know what the difference between the UK and Great Britain are. My argument was more that the OP wasn't talking about driving through wales but @SuckingDieselFella still said that the op was talking about travelling the length of Great Britain.

I have also been wondering about this. Before the lockdown my DH and I were planning to go to Cornwall to visit my 91yo DM in her care home sometime in May. I realise now that there is no way that is going to happen, but I really hope it won't be too much longer. The hardest thing is managing expectations with my DM, although she thankfully still has her marbles and I think she understands.

I suspect by the end of May travel restrictions will have eased but we will be encouraged to limit social contact especially when vulnerable people are concerned. I don't expect pubs and restaurants to reopen either. I'm getting some information on reopen dates for schools etc from a civil service source but it seems like the strategy will be social distancing until there's a vaccine, but not as enforced as now
