Haven’t Spain had a much more rigorous lockdown compared to the UK though, I.e all non essential businesses and workplaces to close?

Here work is still allowed as normal, if you can’t work from home

Only construction and manufacturing which were never technically closed in the uk but def good news as they only shut down a week before the UK.

My understanding is that those in manufacturing, construction and some services are being allowed to return to work, but must stick to strict safety guidelines. The UK never restricted those worker as that Spanish did, so really they’re just relaxing it to UK levels... but yes, it’s good news that they feel able to relax things a bit.

Scotland shut down all construction sites and my DH (agricultural engineer for farm buildings) is furloughed currently so this is good news for me as hopefully he can get back soon and no cuts will need to be made

@flowerycurtain all construction work was shut down in Scotland unless it was associated with the NHS and deemed necessary. Scotland has done things slightly differently to England.

@Italianmoma1983 both Scotland and Wales have said there’s is to continue, can’t see England ralaxing anything anytime soon, mid May at the earliest I think. We aren’t even at the peak yet

Spain are going "back" to the situation that the UK at in now. They shut down all non -essential industry which we never did - we just told people only to go to work if they couldn't work from home

I guess if we are still tracking a couple of weeks behind then we may start opening shops and workplaces in May. Depends on the peak I guess. I think our lockdown was less strict then that would mean we would peak sooner.

I'm concerned about Spain - they're still seeing around 3,000 new cases every day. Point taken that their starting point was tighter than ours, but if they continue easing restrictions at this stage, I'm worried they're headed for a second wave.

@Namelesswonder wow. That would have made a huge difference here. We've got a lot of men on site at the moment building a livestock shed the livestock for which are arriving in mid may. We'd have been in a huge problem if they couldn't have worked!

I think it's highly unlikely things will be relaxed here at the start of May. Only London have started to see their surge, the rest of the country is about 2 weeks behind (I manage A&E in a northern hospital we currently have 50 empty corona beds and are working up expecting the peak week to hit in 2 weeks) so I'm hoping for June! Not leave because I'm due with my baby the 2nd week of June!
But agree with pp, Spain is moving from a stricter lock down to one more in line with ours now. The gov are supposedly announcing their review and plans on Thursday, we're expecting at least an extension of 2-3 weeks on current lock down status or at worst heavier restrictions.

But obviously I'm no scientist or government official so technically know nothing.

I think people are going to be severely disappointed though and I would rather expect the worst and be delighted than expect something unlikely and be disappointed!

I think until we have good antibody testing we just risk causing another huge spike in infections.

I think a phased return would be the way to go.

The relaxed Spanish lockdown is still much stricter than the current UK lockdown though.
The result of the complete lockdown won’t start to show in the death figures for a few more days.
Bear in mind that there’s a lot more testing than in the UK so new cases are being found but the vast majority aren’t critical.
A lot of the infections are happening in hospitals.

I’m in Scotland and I think we were two weeks behind London but that effectively means we went into Lockdown two weeks earlier. I think the country should peak at the same time as lockdown and social distancing started at the same time. I don’t think we will fill our beds thank god.

I am curious that there are more nightingale hospitals going ahead with two more announced this week. Will they be used going forward to free up hospitals for ‘normal’ work. Will they be used for longer stay/rehab. We need a faster better tesr as 24hrs for a result with a 70% accuracy really hampers management and the ability to move or cohort people.

The WHO have said that lifting lockdowns too early is dangerous. The lockdown in Spain is still in place.

Tbh there is guaranteed to be a second wave. We just dont have enough immunity.
But we are headed higher than spain and havent lockeddown as hard so maybe we have a smaller % still to catch it (still 90% left though).

The fact they are continuing nightingales suggests they might lift all restrictions.. But apparently they arent staffed the same as hospitals.
I think the need to sort ppe for staff first. (Though i guess if they test them might the immune ones not need it???)

@flowerycurtain they didn’t have much choice as the places they get concrete from for the bases of the buildings had all closed as well as a lot of the hire companies for diggers etc and a lot of the staff for erecting the sheds were self isolating, I think they are starting to review a few things now though as farmers need their sheds for lambing/milking.

The only people who are going back to work in Spain are the same people who are still permitted to be working here (although many have chosen not to), such as construction workers etc.
They initially had the same rules as us around work... if you could work from home you should, if not then you should continue to go to work but with protective measures and social distancing. 2 weeks ago they said only essential workers could continue working. Today that restriction (ie only essential workers) was lifted. They still have stricter measures in place overall than me do (no exercise, only walking dog within a certain distance of your home etc).
