Covid

Are takeaways safe? Am I taking this too far?

Having a debate with myself about whether or not it's sensible to have a takeaway. I see loads of people are still having Dominoes and plenty local Chinese and Indian takeaways are advertising contactless deliveries.
Thing is, I can't help thinking that the food could have been coughed or sneezed in during preparation (even breathed on, lol) and has obviously been touched by hands I don't trust the cleanliness of, so I just can't bring myself to think it's still ok.
But then, I'm the person washing all groceries and quarantining non perishables after supermarket shop, so I'm more on the cautious (have become completely neurotic) side.
What's the mumsnet consensus?

I’ve been wanting to ask the same thing. It’s my birthday next week and I’d love an Indian

You could blast it in the oven before eating it.

The food itself will be fine as Covid-19 is killed by stomach acid. There are YouTube videos on how to deal with the outer packaging.

Ask for a contactless delivery, pay over phone or on an app. When food arrives, use a pair of kitchen tongs or something similar to put your food onto plates, then zap food for a minute in a microwave. All packaging straight into bin, I chucked my free side salad away.

We've had a few takeaways from our local Indian. We pay over the phone and the food is left on the path. We empty it out of the containers onto plates, bin the outer packaging, wash our hands and eat.

We have had several.

Pizza - have plates and 2 black bags at the ready. One person brings in boxes, places boxes inside rolled down open black bag. Same person opens box, person 2 lifts pizza onto plate. Box one goes into black bag 2 which is being held open by person 3. Repeat until all food is on plates. Wash hands. Eat. It sounds a right carry on but it only takes a minute.

Curry/Chinese - place bag inside open black bag. Open containers. Person 2 spoons food onto plates, person 3 at the ready with an open black bag for empties. Wash hands. Eat. This is even easier than the pizza thing.

Supermarket foods have also been processed by humans. We need to eat. It's the packaging on both takeaway and shopping that's the risk. Just wash your hands.

I think you are over thinking it. You can’t control the elements of a takeaway so either you say sod it and enjoy the takeaway or avoid them completely.
I’m hoping madras kills Covid 😂

I was doing this long before Covid 19 arrived.

No idea but I'm still having takeaways.

Remove the food from the container, wash hands and blast the food in the microwave/oven.
This is the advice.

I'm sure I read it's not killed by stomach acid, it can infect the digestive system leading to diarrhoea and vomiting.
That said maybe ring up the takeaway and ask what precautions they're taking. My dh has a delivery job for a bit extra cash, both he and the chefs in the kitchen all wear masks and gloves and stay away from each other as much as possible
