Covid

It's a myth that other countries are much more compliant

Heard fromGermany -
Teenager meeting mates
Grandmother having daughter and grandchild round
And so forth.

It's not true that it's just British people who fail to comply with lockdown

I well believe it but we Brits do love to slag ourselves off don't we?

Of course it's not. Where have you heard it is?

There are 'me' 'me' 'me' types all over the world.

Agree, I think we have amazing levels of compliance considering the various levels of individuals resources and normal human traits of denial, being slow to adapt, opposition etc. And mainly achieved through the risk of social disapproval.

Everyone knows someone not being compliant. Doesn't mean that generally speaking people elsewhere are more or less compliant than the UK.
It also depends on the country's rules.
In our supermarkets this morning the police were checking what people were buying- a trolley full they let you go, if you had just 2 or 3 things they sent you home without them.

I saw graphs of measured footfall in the financial times and the US and UK were much higher, suggesting lower compliance.
I wouldn’t rely on anecdotes.

Well the people doing AMAs from Spain and Portugal congratulating themselves on having lety the arrogant UK and being shocked at how "everyone" is in the parks and on beches and preening themselves on how amazing everyone in Spain and Portugal is for complying with the much stricter lockdowns we have coming to us (not because there's any evidence we need a stricter lockdown but because "we" need punishing).

I posted yesterday about the WDR (west german broadcasting) report that some Germans were insisting on going to the Netherlands to shop and walk.

In our supermarkets this morning the police were checking what people were buying- a trolley full they let you go, if you had just 2 or 3 things they sent you home without them Well that's just stupid. Lets make you spend an hour in a shop buying things you don't need, instead of 5 minutes buying things you do.

left the arrogant UK and beaches.

This is why we need an edit button!

I am in France. Read this morning that a guy who lives in a village close to us has been stopped multiple times for breaching the restrictions. He was stopped again having decided to meet up with some mates for a kebab in the nearest big town....he has just been sentenced to 18 months!

I tend to assume most of the AMAs are a load of made up bollocks to be honest.

@worraliberty

I agree that the pre-CV AMAs were often nonsense, but there have been some interesting threads on how life is in lockdown outside of the UK.

I hid the AMAs after committing an unacceptable faux pas and answering one of the questions put to the OP- we are in the same country but she seemed to be living a very different experience to me.
Was roundly told it wasn't my thread and to stfu so I'd go with there having been rather a lot of "oooh the dramazzzz" on the Covid ones too tbh.

I’m in Portugal, and there is a high level of compliance - the GNR are armed, you don’t fuck about with them

I'm in Italy and now grateful I've not had the police snooping in my shopping basket! Shock Did have to pass a couple of patrols on my run today, and there were definitely more people on the streets today than earlier in the week. Some people were even walking as a couple, or with children. I haven't seen kids on the streets in weeks.

It’s like the idea that all other countries can cope with snow and never have transport problems. It’s rubbish (have lived in three European countries and they all struggle apart from Switzerland which is set up for snow obviously but has other weird lapses).

it's clear it needs to be both tighter and properly enforced, like in France, Spain, etc to get the message though

Our police force said the other day that people were doing well. Of course that wouldn't make a very interesting story for overseas media to pounce on!

I’m in Germany. The city streets are quiet but a lot of people are heading to lakes and mountains this weekend and there were definitely plenty of people not observing social distance in the park. They’re going to fly a Zeppelin over the Lake Constance area to keep an eye on people, the news said.

There's no evidence for this at all.

I don't know about footfall but there were some stats in the Times today about traffic in various cities: London was higher than Madrid, as you'd probably expect due to the strictness of the lockdowns, but lower than Berlin (which was 14% of pre-covid traffic levels so not exactly high).
