Where are the mild cases? :(

We live in a town that has over 100 confirmed hospital cases and a fair amount of deaths. They say for every death theres alot of cases in the community. But nobody on facebook/parent groups/community groups seems to be reporting being ill (and i hope it stays that way) . Is there even mild cases out there?

Some cases have no symptoms at all so wouldn't know they had it

People can only guess! As no one is being tested with mild cases we have no idea who actually has the disease. My daughter about 6 weeks ago had a cold and cough, was it a cold? Was it covid19? We will never probably know as no testing is available.

Would people necessarily be saying if they had a bit of a could/cough?
I have been ill over the past few weeks with mild coronavirus symptoms, as have my whole family. I haven’t posted about it on Facebook or on any parent/community groups.

We suspect my mother had it and we had a milder version of whatever she had but theres no way to know for sure if it was Covid 19 as none of us were bad enough to need to go to hospital and get tested and I certainly didnt go around posting about it on social media, chances are lots of people have had it very mildly but why would you post about it on SM?

Yes there are mild cases, a lot of people don't show any symptoms but can still spread the disease. Others may have very mild symptoms that are similar to a common cold or other infections, ie sore throat. Until there is a test to check for antibodies we won't know how many people have had it, we will only hear about confirmed hospitalised cases.

People don’t know if they have it if it’s mild.

We have all had mild symptoms of corona in our house (coughs, bad headaches, sore throats) but think it’s just normal English virus rather than covid-19. However we stayed indoors just in case but we won’t be saying it was def corona as we’ve not been tested.

Why would it be reported on SM?

My sister is a ward sister on a Covid ward so was tested. She has asthma and it’s been panicking me for weeks that she’d get it. She caught it 10 days ago and was absolutely fine, she said the worst thing was losing her sense of taste.

She’s back at work now, and absolutely no lasting symptoms or anything.

Yes, you wouldn’t know you had it. It’s odd but a few weeks ago I had horrible eye pain, like nothing I have ever had before, sharp pains in both eyes that lasted for about ten days.

I have read that eye pain can be a symptom. Without testing we won’t know.

All the usual cough and colds are still going about they haven't disappeared . I think a lot of people think they have it when they don't and people playing it down thinking they have a common cold and it's Covid.

if anyone has a case that mild they likely aren't shouting about it, doesn't mean they are not there

Three people within my immediate work team of 40 sound like they had it mildly last week. Four people at DP’s work have self isolated with fevers and breathing pain. I’m in the northwest where we have many fewer cases but they are happening.

I think I may possibly have had it mildly. Had a strange virus starting March 14: loss of appetite and diarrhea, fast heartbeat and sensation of anxiety, moved to bad back, sore/dry throat with choky thick mucus and dizzy spells, moved to lightheadedness and sensation of having inhaled powder (top of lungs felt irritable). Occasional cough, never persistent. Then a mild pain under left ribs and tendency to heartburn. Lasted 10 days or so but I was only in bed the first day and I wouldn't have been ill enough not to go to work; I WFH anyway.

It is only in retrospect I wonder if it was mild CV. At the time I thought not as no persistent cough or temperature.

Interesting Callimanco as I’ve had the irritable feeling at the top of my lungs and tendency to heartburn too.

I'm a teacher and when the schools first closed, I had a really bad sore throat and terrible fatigue - couldn't manage a whole day without a nap - and for a day or two only had a burning pain in my chest. No cough or temperature to speak of.

So no idea whether I've had a mild/odd case or whether that was just a bog standard virus.

I think I’ve had it and so have lots of people I know (London). Lots of second and third degree contact with confirmed cases but those of us who think we’ve had it haven’t been sick enough to call any medical professionals. I only know about the people who have posted on social media, work colleagues (I work in HR) and family members. Only my family, close friends and work team know about me. If only 50% or even less are actually COVID then there are loads out there!

Pretty sure my sister had it (she works for NHS but this was before they were being tested). She had the persistent dry cough, a temperature though only briefly, and loss of taste/smell. The temperature went quickly, the cough was awful for a few days then went to merely annoying, but for her she felt exhausted and achey for the full 2 weeks. Her husband also had similar symptoms but milder than her.

They self isolated for 14 days and it took her a couple more days on top to feel back to full fitness, but she’s back at work now and no lasting effects. Her husband was feeling ok within about a week.

Also, the media like drama - they want pics of hazmat suits and piles of body bags, patients coughing in ITUs, etc. Nobody is reporting “family has mild cough for a week”.
The truth is that at least 96% of us will survive this pandemic. And many will never know they had it.
All I can say is “Jammy jammy buggers!” - but then I’m still in hospital on day 17 of bloody covid.
At least I’m out of the covid unit and recovering well on a respiratory ward. Thousands of patients haven’t made it that far, and I urge all of you to take this infection seriously- keep up your social distancing, hand washing etc. The air hunger when you are struggling to breathe is beyond terrifying. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. Stay safe out there.

I think I have had it mildly. Sore eyes that felt like the insides were burning, headachy, cough and complete loss of smell. No fever. I won’t know for definite until they test people but the sore eyes and the loss of smell are both things I have never experienced before, so it did make me suspicious. Still have a bit of a cough two weeks on but apart from that I’m fine. And I definitely haven’t felt the need to put anything about it on social media Grin

DH and DD2 has classic (but mild) symptoms... high temperature, fatigue and a persistent cough. DD1 had a cough but no fever. DS (baby) had a high temp for a couple of hours, diarrhoea and mild cough. I had no fever but an extremely persistent cough and a burning feeling in throat/chest.
Guess we’ll never know if we had it, but I didn’t post about it on social media.

@Bouncingbomb I had the eye pain too, I kept making my family laugh as I was complaining that my eyeballs hurt. I had weird leg pains too, almost like it was painful to lie down, they hurt so much.

OP - if a member of your family had a cough and sore throat, would you post that on SM? Very unlikely. I'm not sure why you think others would.

My parents have had it (not tested, but diagnosed by a GP) and had the classic symptoms but no pneumonia. My dad (60, with 2 of the risky underlying health conditions) felt rotten for about 3 days, "off" for another few after that and fine within a week or so. My mum had the same symptoms but even less severely (no worse than a cold). By day 4, she felt back to normal and was most put out that she had to continue self isolating regardless!

Gingernaut · 08/04/2020 09:17

I'm sure I had it.

Obese, hypertensive and asthmatic, it floored me for a few days and I needed an inhaler.

Didn't need medical treatment though.
