Why no recent updates of poor Borris?

Just that really, I have been checking the news almost hourly over the last few days and up until yesterday morning/lunchtime we were getting quite a detailed review of how he was doing but this seems to have stopped.

I’m worried after Dominic Raabs flippant “he’s a fighter comment” that things are now much worse.

I’m not sure why I’m so invested in his well-being other than I spent the last month tuning in to watch his daily briefs and (while I don’t think he is a great politician) quite liked his “can do” mentality.

Do people think he is on the mend and will pull through?

Hes got a right to medical privacy, just like you.

People are likely concerned about their own wellbeing or that of their nearest and dearest.

@PristineCondition absolutely and I was surprised with how updated they were keeping us, however for the updates just to stop...

There is literally an update.

The PM is "comfortable, he's stable, he's in good spirits", said health minister Edward Argar on Wednesday

They also said yesterday afternoon there wouldn’t be further updates until Wednesday.

I think he may be worse last night they said he was stable and not on a ventilator.
Which isn't quite as chipper as "he's in good spirits and breathing unassisted"

This morning on BBC breakfast they said he was stable and in good spirits, so no change

The Times today says his temperature is down, in addition to the other stuff about being on standard oxygen treatment and breathing without assistance.

There were no regular updates. There was a lot of rehashing the same old shit by the new outlets.

I don't really think we're entitled to hourly or even half daily updates into how he is. There are daily reassuring platitudes from Downing St, but (with all due respect to Mr Johnson) his health is his own and ultimately Government will continue regardless.

I'm interested, everyone is, but a lot of people really do seem to be living for the drama at the moment...like getting hooked on a box set cliffhanger.

(Not necessarily directed at you OP) Smile

Oh, the rehashing! On Monday there were constant interviews where they asked experts why someone would go to ICU and what happens when you get there. By bedtime I was quite the expert!

He does have a right to privacy, BUT they need to recognise that if they just keep repeating 'He's in good spirits' with no meaningful updates, people will fill the gap with speculation, and fears will grow that something is being hidden.

I'm not saying they should release hourly updates on his latest bowel movement, but many people are finding the very guarded and limited updates disconcerting, understandably in the circumstances.

Things just don't always change that quickly, recovery takes time. What's the point in endless "he's stable" updates? Plus he is entitled to privacy and his medical team should be allowed to continue to care for him and their other patients without being badgered for constant news.

Why do they keep saying that he’s in ‘good spirits’? It makes me think that he’s laughing and joking with the staff etc, but I find it hard to believe that someone in ICU would be able to do that.

Obviously I’m not medically trained but am going off when I visited a close family member in ICU. She was barely conscious and so were the other patients on the ward.

Even Boris’s father said he is relying on the news for updates on his son.

I think we can only expect an update once a day and we had yesterday’s.

What's the point in endless "he's stable" updates?

Because if they don't, some people are liable to catastrophise even more.

Report
BubblesBuddy · 08/04/2020 09:22

I think they would update if he worsened very quickly. Other than that it’s been a daily update and that’s fine. We don’t need a constant commentary wasting medics time.

But it makes little difference surely?

He's not a king, he doesn't make sole decisions. Someone will step into the role and enact the decisions of the government

“ but many people are finding the very guarded and limited updates disconcerting,“

In the nicest possible way, these people are going to have to get over that.

Is 'in good spirits' not usually code for they are really unwell but we cant let them panic??

Report
Youngatheart00 · 08/04/2020 09:26

We just need to trust that when there is a significant update, we’ll get it.

DH has a chronic illness and has had several ITU admissions over the past 10 years. It can be a real rollercoaster with peaks and drops over the course of a day so constant updates are just not helpful in case they encourage catastrophising or over optimism.
