Neighbour ignoring the advice...

AdoptedBumpkin · 07/04/2020 21:26

Our elderly neighbour had visitors on Sunday and two gardeners around today.

Should I try to find a way of convincing her it's not a good idea? Kind of feel it's pointless if she won't listen to official advice.

None of your business to be honest.

My parents are still visiting my grandad (they’ve all been self isolating for nearly a month now, only seeing each other). The guidelines say that you can leave home to help a vulnerable person, which my grandad definitely is- he needs help with pretty much everything. Maybe that’s why people have visited your neighbour?

I agree that the gardening thing ‘isn’t in the spirit’. However if they are working outside and not actually coming into contact with her... I personally wouldn’t, but until the rules are made law there’s not much that can be done. I’m not sure it’s your place to say anything.

We are having the same problem with our elderly neighbour and his grand daughter who lives with him. Hes having regular visitors and driving his grand daughter around to visit friends ( shes 18). Both myself and his other neighbour have told him repeatidly about the guidelines but he wont listen...... and he wonders why we have both locked our gates so he cant access our properties!

Nothing wrong really with having gardeners around if they're using their own tools and being careful about any touching of outdoor taps/gates etc

The visitors on Sunday was a mistake, but if it was his family I don't see what you'll be able to say to convince him.

Depends on how well you know him, if you've offered to do his shopping or whatever he might need.

@PatchworkElmer

they’ve all been self isolating for nearly a month now, only seeing each other

None of them have needed food shopping or the chemist or been out 'exercising'??

If you are close to her and regularly chat, you could maybe mention your concern about the visitors as part of a longer conversation.

Our gardener is still coming and why not? We have no contact; he arrives, does his job and leaves. It's important that those small businesses that can continue to function safely do so. And maybe the visitors are helping a vulnerable person?

You can't control other people. Mind your own household.

Getting tired of all this nosiness dressed up as neighbourly concern. Usually by the #bekind gang.

I think gardener is alright; it's their livelihood and good for physical and mental health. You don't know the circs of other visitors ; lots of people I know are having to help their elderly relatives and doing their best to do it safely. Reducing interpersonal contacts is the point but some contacts are still essential.

Pointless and not your business. Leave her to it. I second what other PP said also, a gardener comes, does their job and leaves. No contact needed.

My gardener and window cleaner are still coming. I'm kern to support them earning a living.

My husband is a gardener and is still working as he has to, he is not entitled to any of the help as he's only been self employed since last May due to a horrific nervous breakdown. He can do it completely contactlessly, and the advice is that gardeners/window cleaners etc can and should keep working providing they can do it safely.

@AmelieTaylor thanks for assuming that they wouldn’t understand what it means 😂

No. My grandad literally hasn’t left the house for a month. My parents have only left to see him. My parents receive food deliveries which they share with him and they exercise in their own garden. All post is quarantined in their porches for 72 hours and all food wiped down with soapy water.

Hope that’s sufficient for you 😁

... Oh and my cousin collects Grandad’s prescriptions and leaves them in his porch, which is separated from the rest of the house.

Wish my gardener was still working! No harm there whatsoever. The family were probably there under caring, doing the heavy housework or similar.

Thanks for your thoughts. I kind of felt the gardener wasn't really necessary, but I can see why it's not a big deal. I really don't know how much help she needs, she seems quite independent.
