Have people left London

Just started to notice that my part of London is a lot quieter then a week ago. Now obviously this could be because people are staying inside but there's hardly any cars on the road & parking is normally a pain in the arse & I can see about 13 houses from my loft/front/back garden & some of them definitely seem empty, no lights on last night. It's just very quiet & i'm conscious its only my kids you can hear! Where is everyone?

They've all chipped off to the west country.

Gone to their second homes / caravans

At least 3 people I know left London to go on holiday or second properties.

All our friends who had the option of leaving London did, back to their parents or to holiday homes.

They've gone to Wales/Cornwall/Devon/Peak District/wherever their 2nd homes are. All places with fewer hospitals than London. Selfish, selfish, selfish.

I know I’d two families who ‘got out’ to relatives and a second house.

Some friends of mine have come back to Iive with parents. WFH but in more spacious conditions than a cramped flat

I’ve not noticed this change this week.

I only know of two families who have gone, one went the weekend before lockdown and but after nurseries closed and the other earlier as they suspected it was coming. Both moved in with family due to having small flats and no garden and no childcare but both needing to carry on working from home.

They’ve left. For somewhere with a garden.

Who can blame them, really. I would have done the same. But still, I understand why people are upset by it.

Everyone has a garden here although not big ones.

My next door neighbour left before "lockdown" & I assumed that's when other people might have left but it definitely seems more recently that it's emptier/quiet.

No difference where I am in north London but it's quite green here. I'm not aware of anyone who has left

I am in the outskirts of London and some of my neighbours left a while ago. They are elderly people with children and grandchildren up north / in Scotland where I presume they went so they could distance themselves socially with relatives.

I support their decision as it's better than elderly people being alone, and they travelled before the lockdown.

My area is empty. It makes it easier to go for a walk at least

A friend of mine who lives in London went to Cornwall at the weekend to stay with family.

A lot of my younger colleagues who were living in house shares have gone to their parents as soon as we we were put on to compulsory WFH (which was a week before lockdown).

My street in a tourist town in S Devon which normally only has one other family living here is completely full. We heard one family having the most almighty strop because the marina isn’t allowing anyone to access their boats atm. The dad was absolutely furious that they’d driven all the way from Kent and couldn’t even go out on their boat Grin

I know a few people who’ve left to stay with family in the countryside. They need childcare and more space.

Some of my friends in flat-shares have gone back to parents, or moved in with boyfriends/girlfriends.

One of my flatmates has moved in with her girlfriend on the other side of London. I might go back to my parents about 50 miles away if the Government remove the exercise allowance as they have a garden, and my flat doesn't.

It reminds of Christmas! I get why people would do it & kind of wish I'd gone to my mums (only 15 mins walk). But surely I can't do that now in case I pass something onto her?

I know of some who have gone to their second home but also some with a second home who have stayed.
It is very quiet here though like the school summer holidays and I did wonder if some families had gone back to France via Eurostar. I’ve not actually looked up how Paris is doing though.

I can see 19 houses from my window and only 5 of them seem to have anyone at home. The rest are in darkness at night, every night. The residents' parking bays are half empty. About 50% of the block of flats on the next street is dark. I guess some of the properties are second homes though so the owners might not have been there to start with but quite a few of my neighbours packed up and left for the country before lockdown.
