Social distancing using common sense

Having just had to brave a shop for the first time in nearly 2 weeks I was struck by how little people seem to understand about the actual purpose of measures that have been put in place.

The coop had a queue outside the entrance and people stood well apart in the queue but the board saying wait here was placed in such a manner that people exiting had to pretty much brush past the first person in the queue in order to exit 🙄.

When I got to the front of the queue I skipped across to the other far side of the exit rather than stand in the designated spot thereby allowing the man exiting to do so without brushing past me but he got quite aggressive with me (not physically) for not standing in the "correct" place.

He was clearly looking for everyone to "follow the rules" but some thought needs to go into what the rules are looking to achieve and people need to use their bloody brains and adapt if the measures in place aren't fit for purpose!

Sorry to rant but I came away feeling upset that I had done something to make us both more safe and got treated like crap for it.

Neither the shop placing the signage or the rude customer seemed to understand what was trying to be achieved.

You did nothing wrong. There is a distinct lack of common sense where I live, too, OP, so I know what you mean. It's as if people are thinking that by following one rule, just one given rule, they'll be ok. Independent thinking is no more.

Where I live, the queues outside shops like Sainsbury's, Tesco, Boots, etc are very civilised, with people standing two metres apart and waiting patiently. When inside, however, everyone becomes possessed - there's bumping into each other, spinning around on the stop, walking backwards, standing up close and staring open-mouthed into other people's faces for no reason. I feel like I'm in an episode of the walking dead each time I go shopping. People are strange.

At my local M&S they have a assistant who instructs you when to go in who will put a hand up to tell you to hold back so that customers can exit without walking too near to you. Other shops don't seem to have thought about this though.

It seems to be different in each shop as well which makes it stressful. Waitrose here have a system so you have to go out a different route to coming in. With people standing to take the self scanners. Co-op not so easy as close entrance and have to queue in the aisle. Finding I'm going to the easier shops atm. people are stressed as well.
