Covid

It's really busy near me today.

I went out to my local high street to try and do some shopping. I thought I'd go today instead of the weekend as I'm not in work, so I thought I'd leave the weekend days for people who are working Monday to Friday. I went to the high street as there are several supermarkets.

It is just like a normal day. Traffic on the roads, people everywhere. There are queues outside some shops and people wearing masks and gloves, but honestly there were as many people around as there are on a normal weekday.

I abandoned the shopping- I'll have to try again at some point though as we're starting to run low and the local convenience store is very overpriced.

It's frightening- it honestly feels like people round here have just decided to sod it.

What time did you go. Its busy here before 10 as the elderly and vulnerable hours are open on monday. I go around 4pm and its very quiet.

Really busy here too - I am sitting in my garage working - it faces out into our relatively quite residential street, and I've seen lots of people walking past.

Earlier today (7am) I walked the dog and encountered quite a lot of people. More than normal.

Why so PA Em? She left because it was so busy. Others clearly weren't caring that much (even taking into account that some may have also been heading away)

But you are 'people'

And one of those 'people' was you.

It's really difficult as everyone is still entitled to go to the shops for food, medicines and to get out for exercise. Most will be sticking to the rules but if you live in a more populated area then you are still going to encounter people out and about for essential reasons just as you are. It's unfair to accuse them of not caring.

It's fine, here. Ques outside the shops but that's because they're not letting many in at a time.

How do you know how much they 'cared'? Maybe they really had to go shopping and couldn't just turn around and come back another day (thus adding to the traffic again).

This whole thing whereby YOUR outing is perfectly reasonable and 'essential' but everyone else's is irresponsible is getting a bit tiresome.

I've just been to our local big supermarket, it was incredibly quiet - no queue either to get in or to pay.

Report
noblegiraffe · 06/04/2020 15:06

I just went to the supermarket, exactly the same day and time as I went last week and it was much, much busier on the roads this time.

Report
Rainbowunicat · 06/04/2020 15:08

Oh honestly stop with the snidey comments and biscuits. I've only been going out for essentials, the same as everyone else I thought. It has been quiet every time I've been out up until today. Today it is busy. I thought this was worth mentioning. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced the same, so I started a discussion.

If someone could point me towards a list of acceptable topics to discuss on here that'd be great.

You didn't just 'mention' it though. You said "It's frightening- it honestly feels like people round here have just decided to sod it," implying that while YOUR outing was perfectly reasonable, everyone else was being selfish and irresponsible.

Maybe, just maybe, they had at least as good a reason as you had for being there?

I did the same and noticed it was busier. Maybe because of people's paydays or working shifts?
But queing for wilko.. Needed washing powder etc. And people coming out of there with wall art, lamps and general stuff. Which I was surprised at but they obviously feel its necessary

@icedpurple It is vastly busier that it has been for the last couple of weeks, that I've seen. This suggests to me that some people are no longer only going out for essentials in my area. It is quite unlikely that today, this many people have simultaneously run out of essentials and gone out shopping at the exact same time. I abandoned my shopping trip because looking at the crowds I didn't feel I could safely keep my distance. I'm sure there were others who did the same as me.

I don’t understand OP. You were a person on the high street, shopping. C Y and M were other persons on the high street shopping. As were B X and D. Also persons, like you, also on the same street, shopping. You have cited your reasons to be there. They could cite their reasons. What makes you distinct from this busy crowd I wonder? Surely you and every single other person decided to be there on that street at that time? So what is it that make you the observer from the margins, and them the selfish folk who are sodding it?

It is in fact very likely.
