That is so shocking and awful.
remembering how impressed and worried we were about china building new hospitals almost overnight, and the lockdown
and now it is here.

They seem to have a suprisingly low death rate actually in comparison

EricaNernie Sat 04-Apr-20 18:04:59

it seems low now, but at the time it was so awful

That’s assuming China told the truth.

I’m not convinced they were honest but they also did very strict lockdown and behaved unlike here.

Hagbeth Sat 04-Apr-20 18:07:21

No we haven’t. The CCP are lying.

I don't believe it is as low as they have said.

I think ours will be a horrific number as still people are going out and it is always an essential journey or they can't see any risk.

Nofunkingworriesmate Sat 04-Apr-20 18:08:41

I don’t believe China was honest at any point

mochajoes Sat 04-Apr-20 18:09:00

I don't believe China's figures

Norma27 Sat 04-Apr-20 18:09:31

I'm another who does not believe the Chinese figures.
However, that doesn't take away from the fact so many are dying here.

JoeySpecial Sat 04-Apr-20 18:09:40

I do not believe China at all.

They have lied enough already.

alloutoffucks Sat 04-Apr-20 18:10:07

WHO say China's figures are accurate.

mochajoes Sat 04-Apr-20 18:10:12

Although I do think they will be better at containing it/lockdown since they use draconian measures.

TheCanterburyWhales Sat 04-Apr-20 18:11:04

Well, the news coming out of the UK hospitals indicates that more people are dying than are being recorded in the UK as well. Problems with recording etc.
An article referenced on the long running threads yesterday said that some of the deaths in yesterday's figures were from anything up to 10 days ago.

But yes, I don't think anyone doubts that China had more deaths than were announced.

alloutoffucks Sat 04-Apr-20 18:11:20

But I am sure that lots of mumsnetters know better than the experts at WHO.

To be honest all death figures have to be taken with a pinch of salt. Not just China. Care homes worldwide are experiencing multiple deaths and the Covid-19 tests aren't happening, for example in Glasgow. If someone dies and isn't tested, they're not recorded in the statistics.

Then there's the argument of whether you count everyone who had Covid-19 when they died, or only those the doctor or coroner believes were killed by the virus.

Youngatheart00 Sat 04-Apr-20 18:12:24

WHO wouldn’t get involved politically and challenge any country’s figures

Raver84 Sat 04-Apr-20 18:12:59

That's because they lied.

JasonPollack Sat 04-Apr-20 18:15:14

Ah, all international relations experts here I see.

The UK is lying about its death rate. Deaths in care homes are not being recorded as part of official figures.

mochajoes Sat 04-Apr-20 18:17:16

The WHO said later on January 23 that the outbreak did not yet constitute a public emergency of international concern and there was "no evidence" of the virus spreading between humans outside of China.
