CV and immunity - can someone explain?

Is a healthy immunity good or bad for virus response?

Is cytokine storm caused by healthy or weakened immune system response to the virus?

Is it possible to test the level of immune function to predict whether it would cause the cytokine storm, if so, how?

Bump for you OP, I need to know this too

Cytokine storms are caused by healthy immune systems creating an excessive response - this was what caused so many healthy, young adults to do badly in the 1918 flu pandemic. Normally it would be those with poor immune systems who do badly.

I don’t think you can know in advance how anyone will react to a new virus. There are lots of people who contract Covid-19 and are completely asymptomatic.

I wonder if gender plays a part as well

Quartz I’m sure I read somewhere that men tend to be more badly affected by COVID-19 than women.

Is there any link between cytokine storms and other conditions where the immune system "over responds" (eg anaphylaxis?). My children both have severe allergies and I have been worrying about that!

@Quartz2208 very unlikely. Sex might however.

@Quartz2208 I think maybe you mean sex not gender? I ask because it’s so important for the study of this illness which shows men are worse affected.

sorry yes it was late when I wrote it!

I wonder whether someone with autoimmune condition would also be more at risk?

I wonder this about autoimmune conditions too. I have an immunodeficiency but also autoimmune issues. So more prone to infection but also inflammation and autoimmune response.
