People like me in shitty minimum wage jobs putting our health at risk and still getting paid low wage. It doesn't feel worth it. Nothing good coming from the company i work for except double the work load....This goes for all keyworkers who in low paid jobs

I agree but all we will get is increased tax when those sitting at home getting paid go back to work in 6months

I agree too. It’s ridiculous that some people get furloughed on more money than people who risk their lives every day earn.

Definitely- of course you should.

Absolutely agree. There's a scandal going on with all of the health and social care workers going out without the correct PPE right now. Most of these people on minimum wage often zero hours contracts, worried about rocking the boat and losing their jobs.

Would be nice but doubt it.
I've been thinking that today. Having a shit day at work for min wage.
We'll all be taxed to pay for those on the 80%
Hey ho
Just got to hope we'll be ok

Exactly it's like a double hit at us tax more and paid less.

So who has had any luck speaking to their union about these issues?

Report
MoreGruel · 03/04/2020 14:50

YANBU, you should absolutely be getting an uplift in pay while this is going on.

We can't even get hold of our union branch. They have been inundated (care sector).

I know, it's so unfair.

Agreed. I'm a support worker, have been for the past 10 years and I love it. Have been at the same home for 7 years. Never had 1 sickness during this time.
I get paid minimum wage. Always have done, but I understood that the money comes from the government to fund this place and there just wasn't enough money to go round so I have never grumbled about it.
But now, I do worry and I feel it's unfair that we are still doing our jobs under more pressure. We're frightened, we haven't been shown any protocol, in fact I haven't even had a conversation with our manager about all this since it started, I was given some information passed on from our manager to senior but not a lot "wash hands, no visitors, no one can go out and put used PPE in a bin outside" . Suppose thats all they can say but it'd be nice to feel supported too. We got some face masks and hand sanitizer dropped off. We had to Google the right way to wear the masks (in case we put them on back to front).
We're left feeling pretty exposed and just left to get on with it, as usual, but these aren't usual times.
I've never moaned before but really? Getting paid minimum wage for putting our lives on the line? (Amongst all the other things we do day to day)
Its not fair and I feel like a pawn in this battle.
Then as others have said, if we and our service users make it through this.. we'll then get taxed to pay towards all the people that are able to protect themselves at home.

Well I am not working but was the first wk or or two of isolation no I don't think should be paid more because where is that money coming from. Its costing a bob t the mo as it is.

I agree OP, I'm only staying in my job until.this is all over and will be look for something else. Exposed to all kinds without adequate protection but told it's tough shit because I'm not a doctor or nurse.

Withnailandaye · 10/04/2020 15:36

I get you june2007
I understand the money isn't there and of course everything is costing more.. at the same time I can't help feel like it's not fair I get paid the lowest wage for effectively putting mine and my families lives on the line.
I'll still get on with things and do what needs to be done of course. If I complained I'll just get told to leave anyway. But I can't as I need to provide for my family. And also I want to look after our service users. I'm not supposed to say or even feel this but I love and care for them. I've looked after the same bunch of people for the past 7 years so how could I not?
It is what it is, but it does me good to have a moan on here now and again Wink

I’m furloughed and even I agree with you.
Care workers and support workers should be much better paid and much more valued.

It is very very wrong that a furloughed employee can be paid more than a care worker working throughout is.
