Covid

Stop smoking during Corona.

Inappropriatefemale · 02/04/2020 07:22

So I have just read that smokers are 14 times more likely to get corona virus because the lungs can’t clear the virus as well as non smokers and whilst I’m probably smoking even more just now through sheer boredom, then I think it’s a great time to try and stop, in all honesty then I don’t even enjoy smoking fags and roll ups anymore except first thing in morning.

Is anyone else out there trying to or thinking of stopping? I thought it would be good to support one anothers attempts to stop at this time.

I have tried to stop smoking once and it was a few months ago but to no avail, I used the patches but now I need sheer will power to get through and some support!Smile

I don’t think that smokers are more likely to get the virus, but the illness would be more serious if they did get it.

I need to stop smoking as well. Vaping is my lifeline at the moment. Good luck

Sorry your right, I did mean that it will be harder to recover from it and this absolutely terrifies me.

I have a vape but I am unsure how to put the oils in it and in all honesty I don’t think smoking oil is that great for the lungs either, and I don’t think proper research has been carried out to see what long term damage it does, or maybe you know? Do you think vaping would make you recover from corona if god forbid, you were to catch it?

I have a couple of fags left and then I will have none as I’ll have no money until tomorrow so it’s going to be a hard day.Sad

As an ex smoker (o 10 years) and someone who has almost certainly had CV I would hugely recommend stopping smoking today. The coughing made me vomit about twice a day. The thought of them being any weaker to deal with it was terrifying. Smokers much more likely to end up in hospital No one wants that. Just fucking stop. I did after smoking
15 a day for 20 years (since I was 12!).

Can I ask how you stopped @Yester? Are you normally a strong willed person with other things in life and so stopping smoking was no mean feat for you?Grin what made you stop?

This preliminary analysis does not support the argument that current smoking is a risk factor for hospitalization for COVID-19, and might even suggest a protective role. The latter could be linked to the down-regulation of ACE2 expression that has been previously known to be induced by smoking. However, other confounding factors need to be considered and the accuracy of the recorded smoking status needs to be determined before making any firm conclusions. As a result, the generalized advice on quitting smoking as a measure to improve health risk remains valid, but no recommendation can currently be made concerning the effects of smoking on the risk of hospitalization for COVID-19. No studies recording e-cigarette use status among hospitalized COVID-19 patients were identified. Thus, no recommendation can be made for e-cigarette users.

I gave up about 15 years ago from around 30 a day.

I used a Nicorette inhaler thing which gave you a hit of nicotine but no pleasure 😆. So it quickly became pointless.

Generally I have little willpower but I'd decided I wanted to stop and that was it. Haven't touched one since.

@BreasticlesNotTesticles you obviously did have willpower though to just decide to stop and then stop so well done you!Grin

When I think of the things I’ve been through in life, and then survived makes me think stopping smoking will be a breeze, yet the other half of me is going will it fuck be a breeze, I’ve even been smoking more due to sheer bloody boredom.

I'm worried about all the shit that will come up off my lungs once I stop. I know it's just my body clearing itself but I'm worried if I catch covid19 while I'm in that state it wont be good for me.
Bloody hate smoking.

25 years smoked at least 30 a day for most of them.
Nicolette quickmist has stopped me it's amazing. You need a bit of willpower and I admit I can't let myself run out but it's really worked.
Amazon and eBay have them cheaper than shops

The WHO are recommending stopping smoking just now and so I’m going to give it a damn good bash.

Tried patches and the corners wouldn’t all stick down so they were pointless for me, I have the chewing gum though so they may help me.

@inappropriatefemale I am a really weak willed person! I read that Allen Carr book and that helped understand why I smoked but then just went for it. The fear of seeing a friend get COPD also was a big kick up the arse. If you've given up heroin you can definitely give up smoking. Good luck Flowers

It's not oil and there is no smoke. Those two things are very important for lung health.

While I think our public health system are handling covid19 shockingly badly, one area they are excellent is evidence based policy around vaping.

We don't know everything about vaping but we do know quite a lot and there is growing consensus that vaping is around 95% safer than smoking with some estimates placing it much lower.

Here is the 'big' evidence review from 2015:

www.gov.uk/government/publications/e-cigarettes-an-evidence-update

and here's a list of all PHE evidence and policy papers:

If you want to try getting to grips with your kit, try searching for the name of it on youtube - you can usually find unboxing videos showing how to put it together and fill it.

@LangClegsInSpace
Interesting link regarding Ace2 down regulation by nicotine.
Here’s a Lancet explanation of Ace2 increased expression in patients with treated hypertension and diabetes, two of the Gov vulnerable categories.

I’m maybe talking absolute shit in thinking I can just stop!

well my electronic cigarette is oil.

No it's not, it will be either vegetable glycerine or a mixture of vegetable glycerine and propylene glycol (another type of glycerine).

and smoke does come out

Vapour comes out of it, not smoke. There is no burning.

Paul McKenna - did the audio book.

Listened twice

Stopped 8 weeks ago and haven’t looked back. Day 5 was rocky. I didn’t want another birthday going past and still smoking so it was an incentive - very pleased I did now. Also downloaded a free app for stopping smoking that tells you how much your health should improve and how much you aren’t spending!

I have smoked for around 18 years on and off more on than off and last May my DH bought me a vape to try. I got a salt nic vape that has much stronger ‘juices’ and really gave me the hit of nicotine. Nearly a year later I’m now on the lowest strength available.
I saw my asthma nurse in January and told her I’d stopped smoking since I saw her last but had started vaping and I felt that maybe my asthma was slightly worse since. She told me that in no uncertain terms to start smoking again and my vape was so much safer and ‘better’ for me than cigarettes.
It’s not easy to quit but it’s worth it. You may have to try to different ways until you find the one that works for you though. Good luck OP

Right now, quitting isn't on my agenda. I'm under enough stress and I'm not going to add to it!

It’s a long time since I gave up smoking but I did it gradually. First I wouldn’t have a smoke before 10 am, did that for a week. Then moved to no cigarettes before 12 and so on. After a while, realised I was only lighting up in the evening and letting more burn than smoke. At that point, imagined each cigarette as a pound note ( I said it was a long time ago, so imagine a £5 note). It worked for me and haven’t smoked since 1986. Good luck OP

Like Iwantacookie I am also not sure how wise it is to give up right now. It won’t undo the damage that’s been done and catching the virus during that time could be worse than just carrying on for now. Long term it’s a different matter, but I’m not going to put my body through all the withdrawal effects when the outcome is uncertain.
