The numbers they are talking about are frightening. I'm just watching the press conference and they're hoping for 100,000-240,000 deaths as a best case scenario if people follow social distancing and they manage to flatten the curve, and 1.5-2.2 million deaths without intervention.

What will happen to the people who don't have healthcare? Or the people on skid row?

I definitely think that Trump will try to cover up the worst numbers. I'm not sure how he's achieve it, but I'm positive he'll try.
On Newsnight this evening an American journalist was talking about him gaslighting at official press conferences. It's just quite unbelievable to think that people who watch him actually believe what he is saying despite so much evidence to the contradictory, but millions do. So he'll either gaslight a nation into believing that nowhere near as many people died from COVID-19 as that actually did, or the American public will finally wake up and turn on him.

Whatever happens, it's not going DH be good Sad

They don't really stand a chance with trump as president. It's shocking.

He's pure evil.

Surely someone can step in before he commits viral genocide on his own people to protect his voting record ? 😳

He is implying the medical staff don’t have PPE (which they don’t) because they are stealing it! Shame on him.

I think it will be worse than anything we have seen to date. No other healthcare system is so disjointed. I don’t think a vaccine will come soon enough but if they could develop a treatment to shorten the duration or reduce the severity it could make a massive difference. I doubt it will be anything Trump is promoting but hopefully a bright idea somewhere will prove to work.

Trump's paid biggest supporters are saying the figures are being fabricated to make Trump look bad: Here. Hmm

That's horrifying. I know things are shaping up to be pretty grim in the UK but dear God that's just the stuff of nightmares. For one of the richest nations in the world, as well as one of the best resourced, their government should be ashamed.

My SIL is a front line Gp in Texas. As of last week they still had no PPE but were about to start testing. I'm so worried about her situation.

Imagine going through the trauma of your child dying alone, not being able to see their body, not having time to grieve properly before the small funeral is rushed through and then having to pay a massive bill for the privilege ?

We really don't know how bloody lucky we are in the UK.

I hate Trump as much as anyone, but if you bear in mind their population is about 5 times the size of ours, then the lower "best case scenario" of 100,000 deaths is comparable to our 20,000 figure that was being presented as a "good" outcome.

Indeed, but he initially told people that this would all go away, that it was a hoax. The populace have believed him and many more will die than would have done had he started organising a concerted approach to applying distancing measures, joined up healthcare, and PPE supply etc instead of pretending it wasn't going to happen in America.

Trump has handled this crisis so badly it beggars belief that his ratings are going up!
How many American deaths will it take for Americans to realise how venal he is? The bailout benefits him and his cronies bigly hugely.

You folks in the UK have no idea. Our death number is currently at 3860. The UK is at 1789 but we have 5 times the population. And we’ve had the virus here longer. Our death rate is around 11 per million. It’s around 26 per million on the UK. You folks need to wake up and start panicking about your own situation. Yes, those without insurance and the homeless will be treated if they become ill. It’s illegal for a medical facility not to treat someone who needs urgent care. We have far more ventilators and more ICU beds per capita than the UK. Our supermarkets are stocked - you won’t see our nurses crying on viral videos that they can’t even get fruit or vegetables.

And many of you don’t even know how things are set up here. The president has little control over such things. Each state had its own government that manages things like this. My state has already started to flatten the curve.

Not wanting to speak for Zenday, but we already have at least two other threads about Coronavirus, the US and Trump, in which Americans have talked extensively about all of this and explained how the US is actually responding - state by state - to the crisis.

I think this article was on another site. It’s about how a population are desperate to believe in their leader at a time of crisis. This is about BJ. But equally applies to trump. There's a good thread about this already on MN, can't remember the title.

Honestly, it's not going to be so bad because, as @BritWifeinUSA says, the crisis is primarily being managed at the state level, not by the President.

@BritWifeinUSA yep. No panic buying going on in "your" country: www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/16/us-sales-guns-ammunition-soar-amid-coronavirus-panic-buying
www.straitstimes.com/world/united-states/no-milk-no-bleach-americans-awake-to-coronavirus-panic-buying
edition.cnn.com/2020/03/09/health/toilet-paper-shortages-novel-coronavirus-trnd/index.html
All the real Americans I know are appalled about what's happening over there. And most of them know the difference between "emergency care" and "urgent care" which is a huge difference when it comes to billing.
