Are school form tutours calling all of the children's parents in their form /class?

It depends on the school. Our school isn't asking form tutors to call all students, but the pastoral team is calling/emailing students who are vulnerable. However there is quite a large spectrum of vulnerable, and certainly for us we're just calling students who we would have spoken to from time to time in school anyway, as well as the ones who require significant support.

My daughter is in primary and her teacher has committed to calling the parent of each child once a week to see how they're getting on.
I had my first call with her last week and think it's a lovely thing for her to do.

I'm sorry to hear that, I'm sure they are not wanting to cause anxiety. Do you know why they're calling?

Perhaps you could politely ask for their work email and then explain you'll get in touch when you'd welcome a further chat? Or agree to a mutually agreed definite date in the future?

Cross post. Three calls since Friday?! That's excessive!
What is discussed and the reason for them calling?

Report
Mitzdob · 31/03/2020 19:51

Yes they have to ensure every child is safe and well

Yes, honestly it’s just a pastoral thing. We’re not chasing work or trying to catch anyone out. Just wanting to know everyone’s hanging in there. We’re calling about once a fortnight.

Just to add daughters teacher dropped some stuff off to her - I did wonder if it was a safeguarding reccie.

I have been calling one of my student's families twice a week, but I do agree the future date to speak. Is this being offered to you?

As a PP said, they will be ensuring child safety, it's not meant to make you feel threatened - honestly.

3 calls since Friday seems excessive. That's once a day. Is there a reason they might be calling so frequently? Perhaps additional needs, health problems etc?

Ive had no calls from any of my kids schools at all! all 3 attend different schools and two have EHCPs and specialist placements...

I've spoken to both kids teachers once

Totally depends on the school, and even each tutor I'd say.

Mine are in a Secondary, Y10 and Y8. The Y20 is just getting in with work set online and emailing a few teachers. However whilst my ds In Y8 is doing similar his form tutor rang last week to see if he needed anything, had any problems. She said she would ring again in 2 weeks.

I think, in a nice way, something has alerted their radar. Possibly your anxiety has made them wonder how you are coping. Maybe you could suggest email contact instead? I'd prefer that in your situation?

The teacher called today for the first time. Think they are going to do it every 1-2 weeks.

We've had a call today from head of year. Just checking my dd was able to access the work and is getting on ok.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 31/03/2020 19:57

Ours are having a weekly group call with their form tutors.
I would imagine that they phone anyone who doesn’t join in afterwards to check they’re ok.

I get a daily contact, either phone or email, from DS teacher. They have to check in everyday apparently.
DS is 15 and in a specialist school if that makes any difference.

I haven’t had calls at all, 3 kids at 2 schools. Older 2 in contact with various teachers to submit work set, and able to submit queries.

Heard nothing at all from primary school.

I know the ones mine are at/I work at are calling the families where the pupil is known to be vulnerable - ie SS involvement, on the SEN register or other known issues within the school, eg they are a young carer, were going through a tough patch just before schools closed.

I don't think it is anything to worry about but if it is increasing your anxiety, let them know. 3 calls in 5 days I would think is a little excessive so if it's different people, they might not be communicating within the school that they have already been in touch.

Depends on the school, my daughters (secondary) have called to see how she is but my sons (primary) haven't been in touch since they broke up

It really depends on the school. Some call all students (unusual), some call those who are vulnerable in some way e.g special needs, emotional needs, safeguarding etc.
My dd goes to special school; they are calling every week.

The lady who helps support DD at school called last week. Although DD didn't want to talk to her, she said none of the kids did. We had a little chat and she said she'd get and call again this week.
No call from DS's secondary school but they've been really good replying to his emails.

Ours is. class teachers are checking in weekly for most, more frequently for 'vulnerable' children.
