The rise in the hero complex

There has been a certain rise in people claiming they are or thinking they are heroes. "We are saving lives".

That basically involves an avid desire to report anyone that dares to leave the house, police everyone else, dismiss the worries and concerns of others, ridiculing, attacking, bullying and emotionally blackmailing anyone who struggles, some kind of irrational fear/hate of children and gleeful virtue signaling about how much better they are at staying home. Abusing key workers that in their eyes are not doing their job,for doing their job, following guidelines(made up or official) ,not following guidelines,in the wrong clothes etc.

There are people who are seriously struggling right now, emotionally, financially, mentally, physically etc. People that are becoming more and more vulnerable as more restrictions and public policing come in. People that have killed themselves due to the situation we are in.

They are not heroes, they are not saving lives.

I've also seen that a lot of it is excused in a way with "this is a scary situation and it brings out the worst in people" but I actually think that some of these people always thought and believed in this way even if they haven't acted on it, but now they can safely come out of the woodwork and share them under the protective umbrella of the "greater good".

Ooh yes, all the FB local coronavirus support groups. I have unfollowed our local one and I just take a peek every now and again. It's like a car crash - you shouldn't look but can't help yourself Confused

I agree. I saw someone claim she wa saving lives because she didnt go her sisters for wine like she does ever saturday.

But it's always going to happen.

People will always use social media to boast about how better they are than everyone else.

It used to be what they spent, holidays, meals out, parenting. Now it's how much better you are at lock down.

It's not really changed. Just the subject matter has.

Oh and our local group has had a spate of 'I was being an old man at the checkout who had ham but no bread. I asked him why and he said he couldnt get any. I gave him mine, I couldnt see him go without. He said he would hug me but they would get in trouble. I went outside, sat in the car and cried....its all so sad'

The same story, with wording tweaks has been posted about 8 times over 2.5 weeks.

Why would you ask some why they didnt have bread? He could have 30 loaves at home.

Either theres an old man in out town making people feel sorry for him to get bread every couple of day, or its bullshit and 'look how generous I am' attention seeking post.

If anyone is struggling with any aspect of this , and needs to rant, moan, whinge whatever ..they are welcome to do so.

You might not be a "hero" but your needs and worries are just as important and valid.

I agree. I stopped coming on MN for a while as it making me feel really crap and I could just feel my depression creeping back.

Some of the posts on here make you feel like you’re a murderer just by stepping out the front door. Personally by not being able to go out and exercise I would end up suicidal, so all these people shouting DON’T GO OUT are not the ones saving lives, they are just bullies.

Shit atm my work colleagues are being heroes by sharing the drink stuff at 27 degrees and the stomach acid will kill the virus bs. All proclaiming it's from a friend of a friend of the dog walker of a hairdresser of someone high up in the NHS.
They have this super important secret info and want to share it for everyone's sake.

Fucks sake, loads of people have a friend of a friend that seems to know more than WHO.

A friend of a friend who work for the MOD that says marital law is coming in with harmed solider on every street. They are just warning, so you can go get everything you need before you arent allowed to leave your home at all!

A friend of a friend who works for the NHS that says the numbers arent true. They have run out of body bags and numbers of dead are in the thousands.

Apparantly these peoples friend, friends dont know about the secrets act, or, that if you are involved in a government conspiracy, you keep you mouth shut.

What's worse, is that people believe it.

My Facebook feed is FULL of this nonsense at the moment. There's no doubt in my mind that 99% of these are made up stories posted by attention seeking tosspots. The people who are really out there helping people in need don't feel the need to bleat incessantly about it all over social media.

I agree. You’ve got people pretty much shrieking at their keyboards as they police every question that’s asked - how COULD you be so STUPID, you’re going to KILL people. Because someone asked if bike repair shops were open. Or if their mum could see their DC over the fence from six feet away.

Everyone is struggling and it costs nothing to tell someone they are wrong with a bit of compassion and patience.

You only have to look at the mental health threads in this topic to see that some vulnerable folk are scared to ask anything or leave their houses for fear of getting told they’re feckless arseholes who deserve a criminal record.

Not bragging about being a hero, bear with me... I've set up the local Covid support team, advertised it on FB. We've leafleted every house. People can email or phone and there are a group of volunteers that try and help. Quietly. Without fuss.

Meanwhile on FB people are saying 'I've bought extra supplies, if you're isolating or work for NHS tell me and I'll pop it over' and various other 'look at me aren't I good?' posts.

people have killed themselves due to the situation that we are in.

Yes, two frontline nurses have killed themselves. Because of the sheer horrors that healthcare workers are facing. So anyone that reports people for flouting the very basic rules that the government have put in place to help protect said healthcare workers and the wider public have my full support.
