What happens to your temp after ov if you are/aren't pregnant?

I am SOOOOO TTC and IMPATIENT!

On only second cycle of ttc, desperate that not successful first time as fertility friend detected ovulation (my periods are all over the place and I genuinely didn't think I was ov'ing). I tested 4 TIMES before my AF, which I know is stupid and I won't do that again.

Fertility friend predicts ov this weekend, so we'll be bd for england from tonight onwards (dh being very stoic about this)

However, can you detect pg by temperature alone before AF due? Or does temp only change after AF/would have been due?

Can you tell how desperate I am - must be hell to live with between ov and af.
(Sorry this a bit stream of consciousness, have been thinking of asking this for a week or so)

Think it goes up after ov and stays higher than the cover line (not sure if I'm making this up - all a bit of a hazy memory!).

hi jamiesam I did not know that your temp went up when ovulating, I always recognise my ovulation as I have a very clear discharge and lots of it around my ovulation time.

I think hm is right - your temp is supposed to stay high if you are pg. Otherwise it drops. It's not a hard and fast rule though. You could have a look on the fertility friend site - I think it may explain it somewhere and if not you could look at some of the chart galleries.

Thanks chaps
Not found the chart galleries on ff yet (only use the temp chart thing), will have to look them out.

if you are not pregnant it drops just before or during your period (you have to know what your normal pattern is). If you are pregenant then it stays high, and may even have another jump to a higher level (called triphasic).

You really need to chart for a few months to work out what is normal for you. But hopefully you will be lucky and not have to wait that long.

Ferttility Friend chart gallery

On FF you can look at other people's fertility charts to see what happens to them both if pg or not.

jamiesam- can relate to the impatient, although novelty is wearing off a bit now for me.

Thanks Throckenholt - I think it must be the triphasic thing I had in mind. I've done temp charting in the past but not kept them because I got pg! Getting unreasonably excited now (and only on Cd8, so I'd better go and play with the ds's to take my mind off it!)

jamiesam Fri 19-Aug-05 09:08:13

Wow, thanks Hulababy, will have a look at them tonight!
Have been waiting since april 05 (when af returned after ds2), and december 05 (when I persuaded dh that we could try for no. 3) for periods to settle into normal cycle. Not happened yet, but ttc anyway pre Sept fertility appt. So really pretty ludicrous to be so impatient and excited!
Boys now officially trashing house, better extract myself from computer.

However your temp can drop also around af time as implantation can cause a drop. Fertilty friend says not to rely on temps alone. But normally if pregnant it will stay higher.

Hulababy Fri 19-Aug-05 09:17:40

Good luck; you'll get there

throckenholt Fri 19-Aug-05 09:25:48

I think an implantation drop only lasts for a day or two and then climbs again - if you are not pregnant it goes down and stays down.

throckenholt Fri 19-Aug-05 09:26:09

ps - my boys are also trashing the house

jamiesam Fri 19-Aug-05 21:48:55

lol throckenholt - I don't feel so bad now!

Hulababy Fri 19-Aug-05 22:07:37

Yes, thockenholt is right - implantation dip is omnly for a short period of time (day or two) and then temp goes back up.
