I've just had an email from my friend in Australia. She was pregnant, we think with twins, and we think she lost one, and thought she was losing the other. She went for a scan and they have told her it's all ok and she is 6 weeks +4. From that we worked out the conception date to be 6th June roughly.
Here is the problem. She split up with her boyfriend and had a one night stand on 13th June. They used a condom but it slipped off and she took the morning after pill on 15th.

So! She is scared that the baby is not her boyfriends. Can anyone help us figure it out? I'm thinking that it is most likely to be her boyfriends, and that if she wasn't already pregnant the morning after pill would have made pretty sure she wasn't. However, if that is the case, what are the implications of taking the morning after pill that early in a pregnancy?

Hope someone can shed some light!!

Would also think the father of this baby is her ex partner. Sperm can survive for up to around 5 days pre conception.

The only way she will be 100% certain (to put her own mind at rest) is to have a DNA test done when the child is born.

Forgot to say her cycle was 33 days so how does that alter the conception date?

No, I don't think your calculations are right - a 6+4 gestational age is the gestational age from the first day of the LMP, so conception date is 18 June going on the scan. Around 4 June would be the first day of her last period if they were working on dates. (Presuming she went for a scan on 20 July). Was she back with boyfriend again at that point? Does she know her dates?

Hi, I've got one of those wheel things the midwife uses to check how many weeks you are. If I set it to 6+4 today, that makes her due date 13th March, does that sound right? According to the wheel, conception date comes out as 19th June, but this is based on 28 day cycle, so if cycle is 33 days, conception would be roughly 5 days later than that, so roughly 24th June. Not sure if that helps your friend or not.

Conception's not always exactly 14 days before a period though. Mine def wasn't - have a 50 day cycle and am only 2 days out on scan, so can't be!

Hmmm....so confused!!!!

She was meant to renew her depo injection at the end of feb but didn't and hasn't had a period since so we can't work it out from that.

What do you think about my theory of her already being pregnant before taking the morning after pill and therefore still being pregnant?

No, if she took the morning after pill on the 15th, she must have conceived around that time, I think....... according to the wheel thing conception would have been around the 19th june.
The other thing to remember is early scans can be slightly out. I had a scan with DS2 where they said 6 weeks, and another exactly a week later where they said 8+2.

thats not so good. I thought that by being already pregnant, the pill obviously wouldn't work, and by using a condom and then taking the pill the chances of getting pregnant then would be minute. Also that if she had concieved at the timne if taking the pill that the pill wouldhave taken care of it. Or am I being naiive? (sp)

Yes, the chances of her getting pregnant are small, but not impossible. The morning after pill doesn't always work (as I'm sure a number of Mums on here will testify to) I'm afraid.
As I said though, (in my case at least) very early scans aren't necessarily 100% accurate on dates, she could be more, or less pregnant than suggested.
Does she remember when the last time she had sex with her boyfriend was, as this might throw some other factors into the equation? Basically from what I can make out, chances of this baby being her boyfriend's are more favourable if she slept with him after the one night stand, but before suggested conception date. Hope it's OK to ask all this, seems v personal, feel like I'm being nosey, but genuinely trying to help

The one night stand was on 13th. She slept with her boyfriend before that but not after. We are assuming from the 6+ date that the conception date was around the 6th june - we hope!!
Hopefully the 12 week scan will be more revealing but it's a long time to wait!!!

But if conception date was 6th June that would make her 8+ weeks now, not 6+, unless scan date slightly out like my early scan was. Like you say, 12 week scan will give a clearer picture hopefully. Can she ask her Doctor/midwife when they think conception most likely happened? When was her last period? As based on her being 6+ weeks now, that puts her last period around 6th June, so conception would be (roughly) 2 weeks after that, as pregnancy weeks are calculated from last period date, not conception date.
This must be a horrible dilema for her, the wondering and not knowing. Really really hope everything works out the way she wants.
