Finally have the details for my HSG - I have to call hospital on first day of next period to arrange it. I also have to have antibiotic suppositories in advance (eeek - not happy about the up the bum thing!). Is that normal? In all the descriptions of HSG I've read on MN they never mention suppositories etc.

Hi Yellowflowers,

I didn't use antibiotic suppositories but I did have to take them in pill form. Don't think there is a huge difference.

Btw, as I am sure you have read on various posts, the HSG procedure is fairly straight forward and quick. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes with only very mild cramping. I would bring a pad as the dye can seep out and stain underwear for a few hours afterwards

best of luck.

I had both oral antibs and suppositories before mine.

Thanks both.

Do you think it is traumatic enough for me to insist dh takes day off work to come with me? I read the info leaflet last night and am terrified.

I don't think so, but that's a good thing.

I was very worried about mine and even took some precautionary painkillers on the way. Once I relaxed (lots of deep breathing) it was fine, and the whole thing took only 10 minutes from start to finish. It honestly was not much more of a big deal than a smear and I went back to work afterwards.

Just try to relax through it and you will be fine, really.

that is good to know - thank you. And the info sheet says no sex for a week before or 4 days after but needs to be done day 7-10 of cycle.

I'm going to try to get appt for day 7/8 pf cycle meaning we can have sex day 12/13 and hopefully catch egg - what do you think? Someone I know got pregnant the month of her hsg - they think it flushed out the system.

I found I ovulated later than normal when I had mine - maybe something to do with the stress of going for the thing - so it didn't really matter. It is quite important to follow the instructions so as to avoid infection. If you manage to have it on day 7 then that should mean you can have sex in time that cycle.

Some people do think that the HSG can lead to an improvement in fertility, maybe by dislodging some mucus. The chap who did mine (a professor no no less) told me that there was no real evidence of this which was annoying! FWIW I got pregnant 4 cycles after mine.
