Hi this might not be the right bit but its the closet I could find in my state f panic. I'm hoping you can help me. I seperated from dh in April and came off the pill. Since then I have not had any relationships. recently though I have met someone and we hit it off straight away. I startd taking the pill gain on Wed as that was the first day of my period. The instruction leaflet states if you take it on day one you are protected straight away? Is this right? The second part o my dilemma is that I stopped my period on Saturday and that is when I had sex with my new man. I am presuming that as my period had ended the egg had gone? My panic is really at that stage could I get pg? On pil for 4 days and just finished period.

erm I've only responded because you said it was urgent

I didn't think it worked from day one and I would say no you were not

but if the leaflet said you are then you must be

I suppose there are different kinds of pills

hi leedslassy.

Pills vary so you should go by the instructions on the pack of whatever you're taking, but in general you are protected as soon as you start taking the pill. Even if you weren't protected by the pill, it's unlikely you'd get pregnant on the day your period finished - how long is your cycle, normally? You can only get pregnant in the 72 hours before you ovulate and the 24 hours afterwards - that would be around days 10-15 on a 28-day cycle, and it sounds like you had sex on day 4? You probably don't ovulate for a few days, although I appreciate that's not much comfort when you are panicking!

anyway I really doubt you are pregnant. Hope that helps! Someone more knowledgeable will probably be along in a bit.

one thing - speak to your pharmacist if you are not sure, they should be able to explain exactly how to take it.

oh i never though of that MrsP i'll go down to ask him now - its not far away. Iseem to think I may have already ovulated as there was a day or so where there was some clear stuff when I went to the toilet, that was about aweek ago. Sorry for this sounding a bit yucky but the past few days have just been drier apart from my period that is.

I've been to ask the pharmacist. He checked the leaflet and said if i started taking it on the first day of my bleed then I would be protected. Thanks for your advice ladies. I'm glad to be back on this site...its been a while!

that was quick! Glad he cleared it up - I remember starting the pill and just not believing I could actually have sex with no condoms and not get pg ...

LOL the pharmacy is at the end of my road - I went in the car. I'm surprised you didnt smell the tyres screaching off from here! He said something about not being able to get pg on your period anyway which I wasn't too confident in but I'd been on pill for 4 nights before I did the deed so hopefully i'll be ok.

mmm I'm still worrying! I'm presuming however that the egg had gone as my bleeding had finished the evening before.

the bleeding from the period is from the sheding of the lining, the egg would have died about 14days previously (plus or minus a few days) so no egg there to worry about.

You can get pregnant from early in your menstral cycle but it is not usual unless you have short cycles and ovulate early. Ovulation normally occurs about 14 days before your next period, approximately. The egg is only fertile for 72 hours, but can be fertilised from sperm from upto 7 days previously, but normally you have to have had sex near to the ovulation time.

Therefore if you have a normal 28day cycle you might ovulate at around day 14, but you could become pregnant from day 7. However ifyou have shorter cycles you could theoretically become pregnant from having sex earlier than this, around day 5, but this is extremely unlikely.

Also - if you are protected from the pill immediately, then why are you still worrying.

If you are actually that worried then get yourself back to your chemist as soon as possible and take the morning after pill that is effective for more than just the morning after...... Not sure why the chemist did not suggest it.

Finally, the pill can make you drier!!!!! So therefore looks like it must be working!!!!!!

If you're really worried go and get the emergency contraceptive pill. It works for up to 72 hours so you've still time.

And, as a former sexual health worker, I'm obliged to say "use condoms with new partners!". And don't stop until you've both been checked for infections and are definitely not sleeping with anyone else.
