getting fitter but not getting any less fatter

So I have taken up swimming three times a week to try to lose weight to ttc. And my body is definitely changing - my bras now do up an extra notch in and my belt goes a hole tighter. But I am not losing weight on bum and tum and actually on the scales I;ve only lost half a stone in two months - surely I should have lost more by now.

Any advice?

Plus will being fitter help even if I remain fat?

Try somekind of higher energy burning cardio stuff like aerobics class or running?

Carry on with the swimming aswell but ime it doesn't lose the weight like the 'sweaty' cardio workouts.

THink being fitter will help but being thinner definitely help (and make you feel sexier!)

Hi Urbantwitcher,

It is very, very normal for your weight on the scales to stay the same when you first start exercising again.

Remember that old adage 'muscle weighs more than fat'? Well, there is truth in it. You are losing fat (hence the loose clothes) but you are also building up muscle, which is why your weight is the same.

As for your bum and tum - sadly we can't chose where we lose the weight from. We will naturally deposit and lose weight on and from some places faster than others. It is most likely that your tummy and bum are more stubborn areas.
But don't give up! You are doing a fab job already by going so regularly.

As you get fitter, have you thought about doing some higher insensity excercise, like running? It will get the weight off quicker and also keep building your fitness levels

Cardio isn't weight-loss.

Use weights, run (intervals) & if you can bear it go low-carb.

just wanted to empathise - I have been going to the gym since June with a total of only 10lbs weight loss - but I am some other people can see the difference - I need to really look at the bigger diet picture - but no regrets - it has to be a positive even if it is not quite the 100% fix you had hoped.

Hi everyone,

The thing is I HATE gym and running., hence taking up swimming. And I started doing about 5 lengths first time I went (pathetic) and am now doing about 50 each time I go and actually really enjoying it.

But I need to lose about two stone for ttc for my doc to take me to next stage (clomid) so need the swimming to take weight off as well as change body shape. Guess it's low carb time...

I am going down a food optimising route (along with gym 4/5 times a week!) this seems to have picked up the lull - might be worth a look - good luck

Hi I hated running but have recently got into it and it has really made a difference.

What stroke do you swim when you go?
Try kicking with a float/doing alternate lengths of front crawl if you're breast stroking/sprints.

Do they do aqua fit at your pool?

Agree with other comments about body shape changing but not not weight. I only ever go on clothes not scales.
