Mid cycle - usually 10-14 days after your dib dabs.

munz Fri 03-Jun-05 10:36:21

lol dib dabs! lol.

Thankyou very much.

If you have a normal-ish 28 day cycle, most women will ovulate around day 14. Your partner's sperm can live inside you for as long as 5-7 days, so the best days to have sex will be days 10-17 of your cycle. During that time i would encourage sex every day if you're wanting to get pg!!

ladymuck Fri 03-Jun-05 17:28:21

And just in case, Day 1 of your cycle is the first day of bleeding. You should ovulate 14 days before the start of your period, so if you have a 35 day cyle, you ovulate around day 21.

mancmum Fri 03-Jun-05 17:31:25

best time is exactly 14 days before your period starts -- so monitor period dates for a couple of months to find out when that is..

Twiglett Fri 03-Jun-05 17:34:18

14 days before your period starts is

a) a statistical average so incorrect for more women than it is true for

b) impossible to measure anyway so no help to man nor beast

You are most fertile around ovulation .. and can easily learn to pinpoint when you ovulate on each cycle by either charting (see or read Toni Weschler's 'How to take control of your fertility') or using OPKs

Twiglett Fri 03-Jun-05 17:35:54

out of interest I used to ovulate on day 20 of a 28 day cycle and I would NEVER have conceived if I'd believed the 14 day tripe that people spout

sorry .. don't mean to be offensive .. but it is rubbish and I've even heard it from GPs

Fio2 Fri 03-Jun-05 17:37:18

buy an ovulation tester kit, they are amazing. i tried for aaaages with dd and it was cos I was trying on DAY 14 and its bollox, i was ovulating MUCH MUCH later

Twiglett Fri 03-Jun-05 17:41:02

oh and also if you have less than 10 days between ovulation and start of your period you need to consult someone because there isn't enough time for a fertilised egg to implant in womb .. but it is an easily fixed problem (called short post-luteal phase)

fio's right .. use OPKs or chart

Fio2 Fri 03-Jun-05 17:44:22

this is a bit of a secret, but anyhow I never used contraception with my husband from when i met him which was follish as I was only 17, almost 18. Anyhow nothing happened at all. i bought an ovulation kit as i was more than a tad worried (21 by this time) and I fell pregnant the first month of using it

Fio2 Fri 03-Jun-05 17:44:44

foolish even

dawnie1 Fri 03-Jun-05 17:48:08

Twiglett - its true - I have an average 28 day cycle but I ovulate on day 20 - I needed OP sticks to tell me that.

dawnie1 Fri 03-Jun-05 17:50:56

Twiglett - what can you do about short post luteal phase because I think I must have it. I have ovulated on day 20 of a 28 day cycle for the last 5 months.

Twiglett Fri 03-Jun-05 17:53:40

my consultant put me on low dosage clomid to give my system a boost .. 50mg .. conceived first cycle (after nearly 2 years trying)

there is a natural alternative that is supposed to help but I never had the patience as it takes up to 6 months to kick in and sort out your hormones .. involving high dosage vit B (can find that for you if you're interested)

short post-luteal phase didn't show on my blood tests as I was ovulating normally just later than expected within the cycle

dawnie1 Fri 03-Jun-05 17:56:05

Thank you !
I shall make an appointment to see my Dr on Monday to get some low dosage Clomid.
Why don't Drs ever tell you these things - it would save so much time.

Twiglett Fri 03-Jun-05 17:59:42

Suggest you take in charts .. if you don't have them then make them up for the last 5 months .. charting first day of period, day of ovulation and when you had sex

Tessiebear Fri 03-Jun-05 18:01:04

when you get "egg white" consistency Cervical Mucus - clear , long and stringy (sorry for too much info!) have sex as much as poss for a day or two - worked for me!

dawnie1 Fri 03-Jun-05 18:02:44

Will do. I don't have charts ATM but have all the relevant dates in my diary so I shall go in well prepared.

dawnie1 Fri 03-Jun-05 18:04:20

TB - been doing that too but no joy so far. Roll on the clomid.

Marne - sorry to hijack your thread

Twiglett Fri 03-Jun-05 18:14:54

there is an alternative treatment out there with progesterone but my consultant didn't give it much credence (she's head of ACU at Kings College) but said that others did, so they may want to try you on that first

also they may need to up dosage 50mg clomid is very low
