Really painful trapped wind after laparoscopy.

Morning everyone

Hoping someone can give me some advice or remedies. I had a laparoscopy on thursday and ever since have extremeley painful trapped wind starting from round where they went in up in to my chest and shoulders, now I know this is a common side effect after the procedure, but when I lay down it is fine but when I get up I can hardly breathe from the pain hence I am staying in bed which is probably not good for recovery either. When I eat it just gets worse so am not eating much and not really sure what to do for the best, so any advice, remedies or tips would be geat.

Many Thanks.

Post lap pain is a PITA.

Sounds like they use quite a lot of CO2 - this is the gas they use to get a better view of the internal organs. This gas as you are aware does travel upwards. I found that taking a couple of painkillers every couple of hours took the edge of it but my left shoulder in particular did feel very painful for a number of hours a couple of days post op.

If you're still concerned I'd contact them today and seek their advice.

Have they yet talked to you about the findings of the lap?. Ideally you should have a follow up appt anyway with them a week post op.

I can feel the wind bubbling around my incisions and when I stand up it's all in my chest back and my shoulders, so painful it's hard to breathe.

This was my second lap to treat endo and I know they managed to treat it all, but my follow up aapointment isn't for 8 weeks, is there anything I can do to bring this forward at all do you know.
Thanks for your help.x

I had awful trapped wind after CS. I was advised to drink a cocktail of soluble paracetamol, peppermint tea and milk of magnesia.

Hi Lynsy,

I'd contact them and ask for an earlier follow up than 8 weeks - that is not acceptable to my mind. I'd ring them on a regular bsais when you are up to it and whether anyone has cancelled. You need to know apart from anything else.

You should be informed properly of the lap's findings about a week or so post op.

BTW www.endo.org.uk is a useful and informative website.

Hope you feel better soon

Attila

I had this, it is so uncomfortable. Peppermint tea, or an alternative is Colpermin which is peppermint oil and very effective

I had this too after a laparotomy and it was awful - I asked the nurse if she had anything I could take for wind and she said a kite! (very sympathetic maner!) I can't remember what I was given to help ease pain but I do remember I was eating fruit and the nurse told me to lay off it as this would only make pain worse. I have found though that sipping a wee cup of hot water can help relieve the pain of trapped wind.

Thanks for all your advice, will try the peppermint tea again, don't really like it so only managed one small cup yesterday but will try some again today. I haven't really been eating much as it only seems to make it worse, will see how it goes today and if no better tomorrow will see if there is anything the gp can give me.

Thanks again.

Just for information really, I had a lot of pain after a lap procedure and it turned out it was due to an allergy to the pain relief I'd been given.

It may be worth checking the accompanying leaflet for any pain relief medication just to see if your symptoms are mentioned there.

I had a lap procedure 10 days ago coped admirally with after pain as it was explained to me was allowed home within24hrs....(have to say I had the most amazing team looking after me at Stepping Hill Hosp in Stockport) Feeling great then suddenley last night back it came tucked under the right hand side of my ribs it was like multiple stabbing having succumbed to pain killers to alleviate the excruciating pain worse than any thing I had experienced recently....it helped but I can still feel it and it's not gone away......Is this normal and have any of you lovely ladies any ideas.......Small price to pay I guess as everything seems to have gone to plan with the op.....so grateful.....BUT it is very painfull wind I'm not being a whimp honest!!!!

Utter sympathies to people in lap pain - it is stabby and horrible. Mine wasn't just in my shoulders but under my ribs and diaphragm too and I had the lap on 22nd Dec - normal Christmas dinner wind was multiplied. I like mint tea but actually what helped was peppermint cordial - much more minty and strong. Tasted pretty yuk, but did dislodge stuff a bit. I also found a big poo helped Grin but as I recall this didn't come easily as it hurt my stitches a bit. I discovered lactulose after a much bigger op this summer to be a godsend in this department. The good news is that it will pass quickly, promise. But I think a lap knocks a lot of people around more than they realise it will. I know some folks are well hard and bounce back straight away, but it took me about 10 days to feel totally normal.

I used Windeze & Peppermint Tea - this combination seemed to work really well.

Sending my sympathies & support! 😍
