Emergency contraception!!! Advice please.

After condom failure last night, few questions please:

Morning after pill - how much?
Brand name so rest of queue in chnist don't realise what's happened?
Found site which give details of how many contraceptive pills can take, when etc to act as emergency contraception - anyone know if this kind of thing is reliable?

Take it straight away or ASAP. Its effectiveness is reduced if you take it in the later part of the 72 hours you've got. Don't know how much but it's called Levonelle I think. It's more reliable if you take it quickly. I've taken it and still been pregnant but I took it close to the 72 hours being up. HTH.

Elisa5 - I thought it was only free if you went to Casualty or your own GP???? I've been to the chemist twice in the past year (no lectures please!) and have had to pay £19.98 each time! The chemist told me I would only get it free if I done the above (GP/Hospital/Family Planning). It is called Levonelle.

Never heard of overdosing on Contraceptive pill to act as Morning After Pill!!! It sounds a bit dangerous and VERY unreliable.

The chemist was brilliant when I went both times. You tell them quietly what you're there for and they take you through into the back of the shop to ask you a few questions... it can make you feel sick so watch out.

Ditto Sobernow... in fact it buggered up my cycle for a couple of months!! Light spotting for a couple of days... heavy bleeding the next day... stopped for 2 weeks then started all over again!

I was never actually sick, but I felt as if I was going to be and I got quite tearful too.

You are better off taking proper emergency contraception. You can ask to speak to the pharmacist privately if you feel shy (understandably). You can take emergency contraception with seasickness pills to prevent nausea or vomiting. If you vomit you have to start again, so I would advise anti-emetics. I have used emergency contraception two or three times and never felt sick but then I'm not a sicky person (no morning sickness, no nausea aroudn periods etc). If you are, then I definitely advise anti-nausea pills.

BTW it is safe to take several contraceptive pills - the amount of hormone in modern pills is tiny - but proper emergency contraception is more likely to be effective, which is what you really want!

Your GP should be able to write you a prescription for it which you can pick up in a matter of hours. Be warned though, it will give you a period!

Hope someone can help. Just a few more queries about this. Took it on 10/03/03 and took it correctly according to instructions. Had a 'period' some time later - can't remember exactly, but either 1 week or 2 weeks later. This would bring me to 24/03/03 at the latest. I think. So, 28 days later (and I'm pretty regular) would be 21/04/03 but no period yet. Is this usual/to be expected? Please, please, please reassure me someone. If I were pregnant, it certainly wouldn't be the worst thing in the world but I'm worried, amongst many other things, about the amount of booze I've consumed in the meantime just assuming everything was ok. I know I could get a test still living in denial at the moment. Don't think I was at a particularly great risk to begin with, accident happened on about day 7 of cycle but........

Tinker, I had to reply you sounded so upset!!
I've had two experiences with this pill the first time it worked and it did mess up my next period a little.
The second, well it didn't work and I fell pregnant. Which now I think about it was a shock at the time but things happen for a reason and I am now a very proud Mum trying for a second. It's no help tonight but worse things could happen to you - don't know if you have any other littl'ns? When is the right time for these things?
Easy for me to say I know. About the booze thing. Before I got pg with my Daughter and the littl'n I just lost I consumed an incredible amount of alcohol without knowing I was pg. Imagine how many people around the world this happens to! Don't punish yourself for that. Any chance you could do a test to mind your mind at least into a particular path then and move forward. Do you have any symptoms?

Tinker, sorry no advice but I just wanted to say hope you're OK. Sorry, but I think the only way to really be reassured is to do a test. It only sounds like you're 2 days late though if I've understood correctly so maybe your cycle has just been thrown a bit. That has no basis in fact though, just a vague feeling
If you are though, re the booze, ds was an accident and I was drinking copious amounts (I really was too, in my late twenties, stressful job, lots of money, great social life, no idea I was pregnant etc, champagne all round) and stopped as soon as I found out (period was 1 week late) and he was/is fine. As quackers says, we can't be the only ones.

Have had to face the embaressment myself today in boots asking about the "morning after pill" and got a lecture that its "not a siutable form of contraceptive" - I had ds with me to who is only 5 months and this is about the first time I have had nookie since he was born (poor dh!)
£24.50 lighter and feeling very pissed off!

Tinker - was your last period clotty at all? Have you thought of doing a pregnancy test just to put your mind at rest? It could have disrupted your cycle, how heavy/long was your period? Don't worry about the booze, I'd been doing that with dd before I knew I was pregnant, and with this one too! I think babies are more resisilent than we give them credit for. But you might not be pregnant, after all you did everything correctly. Do buy that pregnancy test, it's got to be better than dwelling on it all weekend. Good luck.

My experience of the MaP was the same, ended up doing a test to be sure.
Later decided to try for a baby but was trying to stop smoking (patches) & reduce drinking (but it was New Year..) I found out much later that I'd conceived immediately. My body immediately rejected cigarettes, and I was advised to come off patches but the wierdest bit was lager - I couldn't stand the smell or taste of it for the entire pregnancy but red wine was the only thing which helped the sickness. Gave birth and found that 'Mine's a pint of lager, now'

So, what I'm really trying to say is don't worry, your body will have reacted in whatever way it needs to under its own circumstances - but I was hoping for another boozy lunch do, there aren't many of us who do football!

Thanks you everyone for all your advice/concern. Still no period and haven't done a test yet but will do so tomorrow. In a way, not too worried since just don't feel remotely pregnant and keep thinking I'm getting vague dragging pains a la period type pains. But then I got that last time I was pregant!

quackers - I do have a little girl already but have brought her up on my own. Am in a new relationship atm, and although I know he would be supportive, I don't think I would plan to have a child after just 10 months with someone - not yet.

And yes, I shouldn't worry too much about the booze, I drank like a fish until I found out I was pregnant last time. But, didn't finish off a bottle of Claret last night which is most unusual for me!!
