Hi, we are TTC our second child. Our daughter is 3.5 and I had to take clomid for 4 months to concieve her.
I've been perscribed clomid again and I'm waiting to take the first dose.
I got the results of my husbands sperm count this morning, and it's quite low.
She said it wasn't low enough to not achieve a pregnancy but would obviously be more difficult. She suggested vitamin C and Well man tablets, and after 3 months they'll check it again.

I just wondered what you think our chances are realisticly ? and is there anything else that could be done if I don't concieve while I on the clomid ?

If you could tell me somthing positive it would cheer me up. I'm feeling a bit .

Very quick message. We tried to get pregnant for two years. Tests showed that I 'wasn't ovulating' and Dh's sperm was poor. Was a desperate time. But the reason I have to be quick now is that DS - now five months old - is just waking up. He was conceived naturally - against the odds (I obviously did ovulate but only very, very rarely).

Hang in there. It can happen.

Hi mummyloveslucy,
I know how you feel but be positive in the fact that you've already concieved successfully once and i'm sure you'll be fine this time.

Me and my dp were trying for a couple of years when we were told that I didn't ovulate regularly (I already knew that) and that dps sperm morphology was absolutly terrible (1% instead of 15%) We were told that our chances of concieveing were around 2% but because I was young we shoud give it a try I was prescribed clomid for a year and took it for about 8 months before I got so fed up with ttc that I decided we should stop trying and start looking into IVF.

In the mean time I had researched poor sperm counts and found lots of positive articles relating to pycnogenol, zinc and selene-active vitamin combinations, so deciding it couldn't hurt dp started taking these vitamins regularly. (Dp still smoked and drank while this was going on)

I didn't particularly hold out much hope and as I say we had more or less stopped trying.
Well to cut a long story short, 3 days before our follow up appointment to start IVF, I found out i was pregnant!!

This was about 6 months after I had stopped taking the clomid and about about 6 months after dp first started taking the pycnogenol.

I am currently 12 weeks pregnant and convinced that it is this that led to my pregnancy, I was very sceptical at first but I'm proof that it seems to work.

Sorry for the long post, and i hope this helps. If you have any more questions ask away

Is IUI good if couples have low sperm count? Have a look at the booklet you can download from the HFEA website here, I read it before going to my GP to ask for clomid - I think it's really useful.

Good luck to you, remember you've got pg once, you can do it

My friend was told the exact same thing and now has a 4 month old DS. He had a second sperm test which was OK a week after the first so you never know.

Hi,

Your fertility problems are not an absolute barrier to conceiving but conceiving may well take longer this time around.

One semen analysis is not fully conclusive of there being male factor problems. However, his analysis should be redone far sooner than in three months time; he should have a series of them done once a month over the three months rather than one more in three months time.

I think you should be referred to the subfertility unit at hospital for further evaluation. Both of you should be tested further with tests being done in tandem i.e at the same time.

Simple remedies such as those suggested by the GP will not address the problem, for this reason as well you should be referred now.

You should also be monitored whilst on clomid with blood tests and or ultrasounds, no monitoring is a no-no because there is no way of determining whether or not its doing the job it should be (which is to make the ovaries work harder). You should not be left without monitoring of any sort.

Do you yourself have a diagnosis; I ask this as clomid is usually given to women who present with ovulatory problems. In this regard polycystic ovaries is a common culprit. PCO can be treated and other treatment options can be tried in the event clomid is unsuccessful.

You will need to be persistant in order to get answers and I would also seek a referral now.

Attila

Thanks everyone. You're right, I've done it once so I can do it again.

I think I should've started taking the clomid a lot earlier so that the age gap wouldn't be too big. I spent too much time debating wether I could go through it again though as I has Hyperemesis with Lucy.
It was the worst experience of my life.

Fingers crossed it won't happen again. I'll prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

I have been to the fertility unit at the hospital. I've had my first scan to check my overies before I can take the clomid, and I'll be having another mid cycle scan too. This is to see if the clomid is working.
She said that my husbands sperm count was a bit low when he was tested 5 years ago when we were first trying.
He phoned for his own results back then and told me he was fine. He might have been a bit embarrased.
