Conception

Very confused - can you have a period and be pregnant?

I am very confused! On day 8 of my normal cycle (ie 4-5 day period) I used a digital ovulation test and it came up with a but then did it for the next 6 days. My persona told me that I was ovulation on day 9 and 10 (second month of use). I called up the helpline to find out why so many smiley faces and they told me it is a possibility I could be pregnant (this would be wonderful!) So I have done 2 cheap pregnancy tests and they have both come out as positive (all this in the last hour so still in shock!). But I have only just had a period. Is it possible to have a period while pregnant as surely day 15 of a cycle would be too early to tell normally??

Could you have conceived last month? Some women continue to have periods while pg. I have had small bleeds before/during doing a positive pg test.

sorry .. yes it is possible to still have what seem like periods when pregnant (its not usual but is possible)

you can have a false negative but you can't have a false positive .. and you've had 2

looks like you're preggers

oh yes, congratulations. Twiglett is right, you can't have a false positive.

I would say the last one is probably a false period so count the pg from period before that

Just got back from the Doc's - I have to do a urine test in the morning and wait until Thurs for results.. but Doctor is convinced that if I have done 2 tests and they are positive then I must be pregnant.. the bleeding is called implantation bleeding ...and not my period (just as you have told me... still not convinced but mildly optimistic! The pregnancy tests are supposed to be 98% accurate - they just don't pick up pregnancy as quick as First Response....... fingers crossed..

My father was living proof that this is possible. His mother had a bleed every month during that pg!

implantation bleeding normally happens around 6 weeks I believe (but wait to be corrected)

definitely at 6 weeks too prunegirl (I had it with DD and that's what they said at EPU .. that it burrows further around the time next period would have been due)

My gran had a baby at 47 after having full-on periods for 6 months. She started having problems with her stomach and bowels and it was only then it was discovered she was pregnant. She delivered a healthy son who is now a physician.

Have you told DH yet?

Prunegirl, you could very well be pregnant... the doctor said it is quite common and so many women get caught out with their dates because they thought they experienced a period. The only reason I checked was because my ovulation kit was going a bit crazy! Have to take a test for the lab today - told DH last night in the kitchen and he lay down on the kitchen floor in shock! Very excited though - I haven't had my period since ds for 14 months due to having injection contraception, so had no idea if I was ovulating etc - very frustrating. So now very excited but slightly in denial still. Prunegirl, my period seemed relatively normal but I have only just started getting periods for a few months - think it was a bit lighter than normal but bang on period time. Goodluck. Thanks for everyone's messages!!

Congrats, Bozzy! (Prunegirl, will your GP do a test for free?)

Goodluck Prunegirl... I am still in shock! Have now done 4 tests (all positive!) Waiting for doc results (takes 5 days at lab!!) but I think I have to be! Not sure why the bleeding happens - doc was trying to explain about the egg implanting but lost me after that!!!!
